Research and Innovation QUESTIONS: What are ARC Linkage Projects? How do I apply for one? What are the expectations of industry partners?
5
Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment
PROFESSOR GEOFF EVANS Chemical Engineering Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment Geoff has been actively involved in fundamental and applied research into multiphase systems over the last 20 years. During that time he has completed many Linkage projects in water, chemical, mining, mineral processing, pyrometallurgical and petroleum industries. He has also been a member of the Australian Research Council’s College of Experts on two occasions.

Jane Graham Industry Program Coordinator
Research and Innovation Division Jane provides expertise and advice in the development of collaborative research funding opportunities. She facilitates efficient submission of high quality grant proposals in key collaborative schemes including Linkage Projects. Prior to moving to the University in 2017 Jane was Director of the ARC Linkage Program.
7
Introductions – Who are you?
Why are you here Hands raised if industry Keep hands up if you have collaborated on a project of any kind with UON Keep hands up if it was a linkage How many researchers Keep hands up if you have applied for a linkage Keep hand up if you have been successful
8
My Role - Industry Program Coordinator
To facilitate efficient submission of high quality grant proposals in key collaborative schemes including: ARC Linkage Projects ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hubs ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centres NHMRC Partnerships CRC-Ps I work closely with the Research Grants team who continues to promote and administer collaborative schemes and Newcastle Innovation who establish and maintain relationships with industry and identify, manage and commercialise intellectual property
9
Linkage Projects - Objectives
(from Funding Rules) Support the initiation and/or development of long-term strategic research alliances between higher education organisations and other organisations, including industry and other research end-users, in order to apply advanced knowledge to problems and/or to provide opportunities to obtain national economic, commercial, social or cultural benefits. Provide opportunities for internationally competitive research projects to be conducted in collaboration with organisations outside the higher education sector, targeting those who have demonstrated a clear commitment to high- quality research. Encourage growth of a national pool of world-class researchers to meet the needs of the broader Australian innovation system Build the scale and focus of research in the national Science and Research Priorities. Key things here
10
Linkage Projects – Key Rules
Proposals must include at least one Partner Organisation. The Partner Organisation must make a contribution in cash and/or in kind to the project. The combined Partner Organisation contributions for a Proposal (i.e. the total of the cash and in-kind contributions of the Partner Organisations) must at least match the total funding requested from the ARC. The Linkage Projects scheme provides project funding of $50,000 to $300,000 per year for two to five years. The ARC Linkage Projects scheme opened for continuous submission and assessment on 1 July This means proposals are assessed as soon as they are submitted in the ARC’s Research Management System (RMS). Key things here
11
Linkage Projects – UON success
*Note: 4 of the 7 UON proposals submitted in 2017 have not yet been assessed
12
Linkage Projects - Planning
what are the challenges/opportunites you are addressing who will be doing the work how will each party will be involved what contributions the parties will make - cash and in-kind intellectual property expectations (ownership and use) what the specific outputs are and when they are expected to be delivered
13
Linkage Project Partnership (cont)
Be clear what each party will, will not, or cannot, compromise upon Prepare a ‘final’ budget allowing plenty of time for any internal approvals in the university and the partner organisation. Share the application form—ensure all parties are clear on what is being proposed and expected. Partner support letter—confirm early what is: expected wrt benefits needed for submission and rules These always take longer than planned!
14
Industry Collaboration Support Scheme
The University of Newcastle Industry Collaboration Support Scheme (previously the Linkage Pilot scheme) supports UON researchers to develop new research collaborations with partner organisations to the point of submitting a proposal for external collaborative research funding – such as Linkage Projects). Information, Guidelines and the Application Form are available on the Research Services Internal Grants page. Grants will be awarded for up to one year in the range of $3,000 - $10,000 Funds must be spent within 12 months of award For more information:

Available support Workshops for Faculties, Schools, PRC’s, Centres
