Team Members: (Left to Right, Top to Bottom): Renzo Najar, James Letts, Chris Reed, Dan Kelly, Eduardo Borges, Dennis Bradford, Mark Perkins, Julie Watkins Nazareth College Physical Therapy Department is a learning facility for physical therapy students and offers a clinic for those who need rehabilitation but are uninsured and unable to pay for the care they need. Overview Many people who suffer from a stroke have very limited use of their upper extremity. Research has shown that strengthening and repetition are the keys to increasing the function of the arm. The objective of this project is to develop a device to assist with physical therapy provided for stroke patients and, possibly, to serve as an assistive device for the patient to perform a limited set of activities of daily living. Nazareth College’s Physical Therapy Department is not as well utilized as it should be. The facility is over crowded with unused equipment and some devices cannot be utilized because devices around them are being used. Another issue is that the ramps to assist in the PT of walking cannot be utilized because of their size and weight. An additional objective of this project is to better utilize the facility layout and equipment at Nazareth College PT department. ANSYS Stress Analysis of Beam Prototype Device Final Device Results The Upper Arm Extremity Exerciser is able to be utilized by the right and left hands and can be adjusted for patients of different widths and heights. It provides a range of resistances for the patients, has interchangeable grips and provides support to the patients arm to help maintain the desired “reaching” motion. The ramp improvement was accomplished by adding wheels and handles to the ramp and platform so that they could be tilted and rolled to the desired location. The rest of the facility was improved by removing unnecessary and unneeded items and then moving the rest of the equipment so that it was no longer overlapping. Layout of the facility before (left) and after (right) Objectives The objective of this project is to develop a device to assist with physical therapy provided for stroke patients and, possibly, to serve as an assistive device for the patient to perform a limited set of activities of daily living. The device must be usable by a variety of patients of different sizes, strengths, and sexes and must provide a range of resistances so that better strength and neurological connections can be built upon with time. Another objective of this project is to improve the facility layout and equipment at Nazareth College PT department. Resistance Abilities of Prototype (left) and Final Design (right) Chris using the modified ramp
