2 Liberalism Liberalism: Belief that people should be as free from restraints as possible It owned most of the enlightenment. People were classified as liberals Two main types of liberalism: Economic & Political

Economic Liberalism: Laissez-Faire (Let It Be) State should not interrupt the natural economic force Government were allowed in 3 primary functions 1. Defense of the country 2. polices protection of individuals 3. construction & maintenance of public works Thomas Malthus: Essay on principles of population Political Liberalism: set of beliefs 1. Equality before law 2. Freedom of assembly 3. Freedom of arbitrary arrest Beliefs must be guaranteed by a written Doc. All people have equal civil rights, not equal political rights Harriet Taylor & John Mill on the subjection of women

4 Nationalism Nationalism: rose out of awareness of being part of a community that has common institutes, traditions, language, and customs Each nationality should have its own government Threatened to upset the existing political order Nationalism divided people into groups

5 Early socialism Early Socialism: Largely the product of political theorists or intellectuals who wanted equality in social conditions These theorists were labeled as the Utopian Socialists (Name is still used today) Wanted to create new system of social government Charles Fourier Robert Owen Flora Tristan
