2 IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Exam: Tuesday 5th June am. - 1 hour and 45 minutes long. - 5 questions. - 80 marks -> 50% of the final grade. - Mock exam for questions 1-4 on Tuesday 21st November. - Graded using the new 1-9 system. - Mock papers and other resources are available on the English curriculum website for additional study at home.

3 Question One This question assesses the student’s ability to identify and interpret explicit and implicit information and ideas. - 4 marks - 5 minutes Facts must be taken from the correct lines. Facts must have enough detail and must not be too obvious. Look at the traps/errors that can be made. Facts can be copied but not huge chunks of the text. Facts cannot be too similar to one another.

4 Question Two This question assesses Language ie: Words / Phrases / Language Features /Language Techniques / Sentence Forms. - 8 marks - 10 minutes - 3 to 4 paragraphs Only 8 more words between 1 and 2 yet another mark picked up!

5 Question Three This question assesses how the writer has structured a text i.e. beginnings / endings / perspective shifts / topic changes / cohesion. - 8 marks - 10 minutes - 3 to 4 paragraphs Only 24 more words between answer 1 and 2 yet at least two marks better.

6 Question Four This question assesses the student’s ability to evaluate texts critically and support this with appropriate textual references. - 20 marks - 25 minutes - 4 to 5 paragraphs Must have language analysis! Be careful not to misread! Better to stick with one side.

7 Question Five This question assesses the ability to communicate effectively and imaginatively, adapt tone, style and register for different forms, purposes and audiences. - 40 marks - 40 minutes - 24 marks for Content and Organisation / 16 marks for Accuracy (Spelling / Punctuation)

8 AO5: CONTENT AO5: ORGANISATION Upper Level 4 (22-24) Register is convincing and compelling for audience. Assuredly matched to purpose. Extensive and ambitious vocabulary with sustained crafting of linguistic devices. Varied and inventive use of structural features. Writing is compelling, incorporating a range of convincing and complex ideas. Fluently linked paragraphs with seamlessly integrated discourse markers. Lower Level 4 (19-21) Register is convincingly matched to audience. Convincingly matched to purpose. Extensive vocabulary with conscious crafting of linguistic devices. Varied and effective structural features. Writing is highly engaging with a range of developed complex ideas. Consistently coherent use of paragraphs with integrated discourse markers. Upper Level 3 (16-18) Register is consistently matched to audience. Consistently matched to purpose. Increasingly sophisticated vocabulary and phrasing, chosen for effect, a range of successful linguistic devices. Effective use of structural features. Writing is engaging, using a range of clear, connected ideas. Coherent paragraphs with integrated discourse markers. Lower Level 3 (13-15) Register is generally matched to audience. Generally matched to purpose. Vocabulary clearly chosen for effect and appropriate use of linguistic devices. Usually effective use of structural features. Writing is engaging, with a range of connected ideas. Usually coherent paragraphs with a range of discourse markers. Upper Level 2 (10-12) Some sustained attempt to match register to audience. Some sustained attempt to match purpose. Conscious use of vocabulary with some use of linguistic devices. Some use of structural features. Increasing variety of linked and relevant ideas. Some use of paragraphs and some use of discourse markers. Lower Level 2 (7-9) Attempts to match register to audience. Attempts to match purpose. AO6: TECHNICAL ACCURACY Level 4 (13-16) Sentence demarcation is consistently accurate. Wide range of punctuation is used with a high level of accuracy. Uses a wide range of appropriate sentence forms for effect. Uses Standard English consistently and appropriately with secure control of complex grammatical structures . High level of accuracy in spelling, including ambitious vocabulary. Extensive and ambitious use of vocabulary. Level 3 (9-12) Sentence demarcation is mostly accurate. Range of punctuation is used, mostly with success. Uses a variety of sentence forms for effect. Mostly uses Standard English appropriately with mostly controlled grammatical structures. Generally accurate spelling, including complex and irregular words. Increasingly sophisticated use of vocabulary. Level 2 (5-8) Sentence demarcation is sometimes accurate. Some control of a range of punctuation. Attempts a variety of sentence forms. Some use of Standard English with some control of agreement. Some accurate spelling of more complex words. Varied use of vocabulary. Level 1 (1-4) Occasional use of sentence demarcation. Some evidence of conscious punctuation. Simple range of sentence forms.
