Part II Types of Fossils
3
Types of Fossils: Molds Casts Trace fossils Petrified fossils Body
4
Mold fossils- a visible empty space that was left after an organism was buried in sediment and then decayed CLAY DEMONSTRATION
5
Example of a Mold Fossil
6
Cast fossils- Minerals in rocks fill a space left by a decayed organism
If a space in the imprint is filled with minerals when the original animal or plant part dissolved, it is called a cast. Cast fossil
7
Example of a Cast Fossil
8
HOT Question: Why do you think scientists have rarely found a fossilized jellyfish?
Answer: They have soft bodies
9
PowerPoint 5 3. Trace Fossil- Markings left by an animal (footprint, trail, or burrow) A footprint of an animal is called a Trace Fossil
10
Example of a Trace Fossil
11
4. Petrified Fossil- Minerals enter and replace the hard parts of an organism
12
Petrification This is the most common method of fossil preservation.
The shape of the original plant or animal is preserved as rock. Sometimes the original material is dissolved away leaving the form and structure but none of the organic material remains.

5. Body Fossil Unaltered remains of organisms in natural preservatives (amber, tar, frozen ground)
15
Natural Preservatives
Scientists have discovered fossils in the following natural preservatives Original Remains Tar- La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles Amber-preserved is a rare fire beetle Frozen Ground-Frozen baby mammoth found in the permafrost of Siberia goofyblog.net/news-baby-woolly-mammoth-found/
