The Man-Machine Interface
Class 5: Ethics, Dangers, Perceptions, & Control May 9, 2014 Jon Gabay
2
Today we will look at In this lecture we will look at:
How we control our technology, and how our technology controls us. What the social machine has done to us and what’s in store. What is altered reality and why it will be desirable. At what point are we not us anymore? Who controls that manipulative power and to what end?
3
Thanks where thanks are due
Only 100 years ago, our ancestors huddled in dark unheated primitive buildings. Light was from candle, fire, or oil lamp. Cooking was from fire. There was no communications and virtually no emergency services. Medical care was scarce and primitive. Food, water, raw goods were not instantly available.
4
It’s just civilized Electric lights everywhere.
In such a short time we have : Electric lights everywhere. Heat and air conditioning. Phones, internet, constant connectivity. Advanced diagnostic and treatments for medical conditions and trauma. Cheap plentiful food and water. Transportation and global access. Left the planet and lived in space. Split the atom for power and war.
5
But, in a broader sense We are now dependent on the machine to survive at all! We are dependant on the food industries that can control food prices, content, and availability. We are dependant on the energy industry which makes it possible to cook, heat, and cool our houses and pump our water. We are dependent on our communications companies to keep us connected. We are dependant on the medical industry to only use the remedies that they prescribe and may be in their interest not to cure. We are dependant of the financial industry who set values, makes the rules, then manipulates the system to take more and more. We are held hostage by governments who equate money with speech making the majority silent.
6
We’re watching you!!! You are always being watched and judged.
As a valued member of our society machine you should realize that: You are always being watched and judged. Someone or something always knows where you are, who you are with, who you associate with, what your values and ideologies are, and you are always being assessed as a potential threat or foe. Anyone or anything that threatens the status quo will be dealt with. Policies are set by the greedy and powerful.
7
Over 50 and stronger than ever
Not to long ago, was the 50th anniversary of the first know public testing on subliminal advertising. Coca-Cola and the US Government did a study in movie theatres. The Exorcist was the first movie we were told had subliminal cuts to make it scarier. Early department stores used ping patterns keyed to advertisements on TV. Continued results in multi modulated audio messaging. Military Recruiting adds were first publicly scrutinized for using subliminal video techniques. High Def and video compression are perfect for real time insertion of just selected update areas. Modern multi image reconstruction makes it all but impossible to find.
8
Deeper still This is nothing new.
Mood control, setting the stage, emotional commitment This is nothing new. For centuries, the musical modes have evolved because they stimulate, stir, or move people emotionally. Theatrical lighting and dramatic effects have also been evolving for centuries to draw us into the story. The psychology of presentation takes advantage of the way we work to make us work for someone else. Example – inverted S pattern Example – color scheme in HoJo Example – color shades of pink to calm inmates Even sub audible dissonant notes can cause an endorphin response.
9
What does this have to do with Man/Machine Interface?
Because emotional responses are easy to illicit. AND Because emotional responses are easy to detect and measure. Galvanic skin response Heart-rate Blood Pressure Respiration Perspiration Adrenal levels They now form a new feedback loop allowing us to control machines by thinking of an event or an experience. The brain fires in many of the the same ways with an experience or a memory.
10
Some amusing results Pizza, pizza, milkshake, itch
High level command sequences could be thought sequences like : Pizza, pizza, milkshake, itch Burn, sunshine, ice, tickle Dark, lilac, bee sting, sneeze Red circle, blue square, green triangle
11
At University of California at Berkeley:
How far are we? To see the world through someone else’s eyes. At University of California at Berkeley: Brain scan data is applied to a mapping algorithm. The patterns highlighted by scans could identify which face was shown. The research was able to recreate the facial images by scanning the subjects brain activity. Machine can see what’s being remembered when we see a face. This is the underlying technology for machine based mind reading. And better understanding from federally funded brain mapping will enhance this ability. It is conjectured that eventually, this technology can be used to re image dreams.
12
Needs to be non intrusive
No one wants to have to wear a helmet with a dozen contacts. These types of brainwaves and wearable sensors need to be minimally intrusive. No on wants wires up their nose. The fewest number of contacts, the better. Or will the direct neural chips be commonplace. Sealed neural implants can wirelessly connect at low power levels to our PAN. Wireless charging or harvesting can provide power. Our PAN connects to our global network. This connects our neural brain directly with the global machine. Using this technology, researchers can already control a mouse movement remotely over internet.
13
Deeper Still Research with blind and deaf people has yielded neural
interfaces that can directly stimulate the brain. Implants for ears and optic nerve interfaces already show the technology is possible and feasible. This level of neural interface may eliminate the need altogether for displays, headphones, speakers, and physical user interface. An ‘Enhanced Reality’ can now be created where senses are enhanced, data is overlaid on our field of view, audio alerts are quietly beeping away, and virtual video screens will feed us news and entertainment. All that is needed is connectivity to the rest of the machine.
14
Enhanced reality users will have advantages
Instant high level connectivity will divert them if issue with present route. Instant high level connectivity will alert them if someone they are looking at is dangerous or wanted. Instant high level connectivity will detect an oncoming health issue like a heart attack, call for help, and even start administering medications. Instant high level connectivity will protect children from abduction and catch criminals. Instant high level connectivity can alert them if allergens are in a food or what foods have GMO or pesticide burdens. Skill-sets and memories can be uploaded and downloaded. One day we may find that consciousness may exist outside the human body; the essence of what we are can be stored and restored.
15
Who will we be when we are connected?
If our memories and emotions can be manipulated, we become different people. Are we in control if every desire and dream is implanted in us from an outside source? How will we be torn and manipulated by the real powers? What are we capable of when we are not ourselves. Will the powerful abuse the helpless? Are we voluntarily becoming slaves? What about our ability to forget? It is even been found that VR experiences can do what pharmaceuticals can do. What is reality when we are not in control? Will we be another type of drone?
16
A step back We are like expendable commodities.
Looking back at how we have been treated so far: We are like expendable commodities. We still live in a feudal society but now serve more castle lords. We pay for electricity, phone, internet, heat, cooling, rent, food, taxes, and more. There is little concern for our health and safety as long as there is profit to be made. People in authority and power sell us out every day for short term gain. Blind ambition threatens our environment, health, safety and existence. Our media dumbs us down instead of raising the bar. We cater to the lowest uncommon denominator and lower expectations generation to generation.
17
If we let this happen Historically, the low level citizen has not been in charge. If we are going to become consciously merged with an advanced societal machine, we need safeguards. International recognition that our data is ours to give, license, or sell. Technological safeguards that keep memory manipulation safeguards in place. Security based safeguards that protect and preserve our individuality and access to true and free information. Net neutrality, no person, corporation, or agency should have advantage or control. Secure protocols and net structure. Guaranteed protection and rights for those that choose not to connect.
18
This is being addressed now
The Netmundial conference just took place. Over 500 delegates from over 50 countries have just met in San Paulo Brazil. They are discussing an internet constitution. This includes guidelines for ethics, privacy, equal access, neutrality, where to draw the line, and not allow connectivity to become too intrusive. They are pushing for a UN resolution that privacy and right to privacy is an inalienable right. They want limits on cyber control and sovereignty, especially in light of NSA surveillence scandals. Don’t let corporate interests and doublespeak derail this.
19
Is this our destiny? Are we destined to become a merged consciousness? What are we capable of when focused group consciousness is directed? Our understanding of our place in the universe is changing. Quantum mechanics says we are more than just observers, we influence our surroundings. Early experiments with fish and birds concluded that conscious minds can effect the outside world. What is possible with controlled focus? Will we be creators or destroyers? And what of the Krell?
