1 Warm-Up Mon 11/6 Write the ENTIRE equation for photosynthesis.
Using the products of photosynthesis, explain how life on Earth would be affected if a mutation prevented plants from carrying on photosynthesis.

2 Add to TOC & Glue in Pages…
#60 NOTES: Cells & Energy #61 ATP Coloring #62 ATP Manipulative #63 WS: Energy Basics #64 NOTES: Photosynthesis #65 Photosynthesis Concept Map #66 NOTES Cellular Respiration

3 Warm-Up Explain why plants must engage in cellular respiration.

4 Warm-Up TUES 11/7 Write the entire equation for photosynthesis in words. Write the entire equation for cellular respiration in words Using the reactants and products, explain how plants and animals are dependent on each other for life.

5 Warm-Up: The diagram below shows CO2 and O2 levels in a pond in sunlight & darkness
Daytime Night time Explain what causes the decrease in O2 concentrations and rise in CO2 concentrations during the night.

6 To be successful today…
Pick up warm up sheet & graded work (1) Pull out review sheet energy unit test tomorrow!!

7 To be successful today…
Pick up graded work (1) Pull out Review sheet energy unit test tomorrow

8 Warm-Up In the dark 1) Bromthymol Blue (BB) is an indicator that turns from green to yellow in the presence of carbon dioxide, and blue when carbon dioxide levels are low (or high oxygen levels). Which test tube accurately reflects the color change when both a snail & Elodea plant are added to BB and placed in a dark environment? 2) In a sunlight environment?

9 CELLULAR RESPIRATION Essential Question: How does the mitochondria break down glucose and convert it into energy the cell can use (ATP)?

10 In the last chapter green plants used ________________ to
AUTOTROPHS ___________ use energy from sunlight or chemicals to make their own food In the last chapter green plants used ________________ to trap energy from __________ and make ______________ PHOTOSYNTHESIS sunlight food (glucose)

11 PHOTOSYNTHESIS CELLULAR RESPIRATION
Quick Overview Video PHOTOSYNTHESIS ___________ + _________ + ___________ →_______________ + __________ 6 CO2 6 H2O C6H12O6 6O2 CELLULAR RESPIRATION C6H12O6 6 CO2 _____________ + _________ →________ + __________ + __________ 6O2 6 H2O The two equations are exact opposites!

12 Why do cells need cellular respiration?
Recall…Energy stored in glucose cannot be used by the cell Cellular Respiration releases energy in glucose and converts it to ATP, the form of energy that the cell CAN use

13 What kind of organisms do this?
animals plants bacteria fungi ALL ORGANISMS, INCLUDING BACTERIA USE CELLULAR RESPIRATION TO MAKE ATP!

14 TWO TYPES OF CELLULAR RESPIRATION
Aerobic Respiration Anaerobic Respiration

15 Aerobic Cellular Respiration (WITH Oxygen)
Occurs in the mitochondria Reactants (requires): Glucose (C6H12O6) & Oxygen (O2) Products (makes): Carbon dioxide (CO2) & Water (H2O) & 32 ATP (that’s A LOT!!)

16 This is the carbon dioxide that you breathe out when you exhale!!!

17 3 steps to aerobic respiration
1) glycolysis (glucose is broken down) 2) Kreb’s Cycle 3) Electron Transport Chain

18 Anaerobic Respiration: (WITHOUT Oxygen)
Occurs in the cytoplasm Two steps: glycolysis followed by fermentation But only makes 2 ATP (That’s a little !!)

19 Two types of anaerobic respiration (fermentation)

20 1) Lactic Acid Fermentation
Occurs in muscle cells of animals (& humans) When you exercise and can’t take in oxygen as fast as your muscles need, then your muscle cells produce lactic acid (makes your muscles sore!)

21 2) Alcohol Fermentation
Occurs in yeast and some bacteria Produce alcohol & CO2 when they perform fermentation Causes bread to rise and used to make alcoholic beverages
