7 Our goals Through the Declaration of Millennium development goals
Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Achieve universal primary education Promote gender equality and empower women Reduce child mortality Improve maternal health Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Ensure environmental sustainability Develop a global partnership for development Through the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the Millennium Development Goals, the world has a set of commitments, actions and goals to stop and reverse the spread of HIV. In 2001 Heads of State and Government Representatives of 189 nations gathered at the first-ever Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly on HIV/AIDS. They unanimously adopted the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS, acknowledging that the AIDS epidemic constitutes a “global emergency and one of the most formidable challenges to human life and dignity.” At a High Level Meeting on AIDS held in 2006, Heads of State, Governments, the international community, civil society and the private sector reaffirmed and recommitted to the full implementation of the 2001 Declaration in the coming years, with a promise to review this again in 2008. The Declaration of Commitment covers ten priorities, from prevention to treatment to funding. It was designed as a blueprint to meet the Millennium Development Goal of halting and beginning to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015. UNAIDS November 19, 2018

8 Principles for the coordination of national AIDS responses
One agreed HIV/AIDS Action Framework that provides the basis for coordinating the work of all partners. One National AIDS Coordinating Authority, with a broad-based multisectoral mandate. One agreed country-level Monitoring and Evaluation System. On 25 April 2004, UNAIDS, the United Kingdom and the United States co-hosted a high-level meeting at which key donors reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening national AIDS responses led by the affected countries themselves. They endorsed the "Three Ones" principles, to achieve the most effective and efficient use of resources, and to ensure rapid action and results-based management: UNAIDS November 19, 2018

9 Our work on the ground UNAIDS is committed to strengthening nationally owned and led responses to the epidemic. In more than 130 countries, the representatives of UN organizations coordinate the AIDS-related activities of the United Nations through regular meetings of the UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS. [ Can talk about work of CRD, give examples of how your team works with partners on the ground ] UNAIDS/S.NOORANI UNAIDS November 19, 2018

10 Our work globally UNAIDS assists in ensuring better coordination among its partners in the UN system, governments, civil society, donors, the private sector and others. Efforts include the scale up of HIV prevention, treatment, care and support with the aim of coming as close as possible to the goal of universal access to treatment by 2010 for all those who need it. [ Can talk about recent polices such as the HIV prevention policy. You can also explain why polices are so important ] UNAIDS November 19, 2018

11 Heart of our commitment
UNAIDS believes that working closely with people living with HIV is essential to an effective response in recognizing that the most inspirational leaders are people living with and affected by HIV. UNAIDS is fully committed to the Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV/AIDS and seeks to ensure that people living with HIV are at the heart of all activities. [ give examples of where Civil society has really played a major role in the work you do. Explain what happens when Civil Society isn’t involved and why Civil Society involvement is a key component to sustainability ] UNAIDS November 19, 2018
