3 Light waves Teacher Explanation Before we can explain the origins of the universe we must first understand how the wavelength light is seen. White visible light is split up into a spectrum of colours. You will have seen this in a rainbow. Red is at one end and blue is at the other.

Teacher Explanation Light waves As you can see the longest wavelength is seen in the red When scientists observe objects having a longer wavelength than they should (they are further away) they say they have redshifted. If they observe objects with a shorter wavelength than they should be (they are closer) they say they have blue shifted.

9 Big bang Teacher Explanation By the red-shift of galaxies and other distant objects, we know that more distant objects are moving away from us faster than closer ones. This can be explained if the universe is expanding. Astronomers use this information and other data to work out the theories that explain the origin and present state of the universe. One of these is know as the big bang theory, first suggested in the 1920s. This says that the whole universe and all the matter in it started out as a tiny point of concentrated energy about 13.5 billion years ago. The universe expanded from this point and is still expanding. As the universe expanded, gravity caused matter to clump together to form stars.
