1 Profile of Professional Growth Reflection

2 Writing about Teaching
Description is called for when prompts ask for “what” happened during a learning experience. Analysis is called for when prompts ask for the “how,” “why,” or “in what way” a learning experience was or was not successful. Reflection is called for when prompts ask “how” you would handle a learning experience in the future. This may also require analysis of the experience.

3 REFLECTION: What is the big deal?
Reflection requires us to think about what we are doing, why we are doing it, what the outcomes are, and how this information can be used for our continuous improvement. (McLaughlin & Vogel, 1998)

4 What is Reflection? Improves and informs teaching practice
Identifies successes and challenges Demonstrates what a teacher has learned about a teaching experience

5 Examples of Reflective Phrases
A reflective writer may find it helpful to use phrases such as the following: Upon reflection… The significance of this activity… It is important for me to realize that … This activity has prompted me to … This has helped me to recognize that … I now realize that…

In what ways have your PGE’s and their related activities directly or indirectly had an impact on student learning? Reflecting on each of the PGE’s presented, discuss any changes, additions, and/or next steps that would enhance your professional growth. NBPTS.org
