16th and 23rd April 2018

2 This study had two purposes?
1) to systematically gain actual data about the nature of traffic flows at the Farley Way-Loughborough Road- Woodhouse Road junction; in terms of the rate of vehicles movements and the routes taken- this new knowledge should provide a body of evidence about flow rates through this busy part of the Quorn road network 2) To gain real data about queueing behaviours at two junctions; in terms of the length of queues, time spent by vehicles waiting in queues and the frequency of queues formulation Collectively this new knowledge was required to help inform ‘road network mitigation needs’ for future housing developments

6 About the information on queues that might prove valuable
1. length of queues (here we are after the number(s) of vehicles forming the queue(s)) Explanation- we are trying to find out the (max and possibly average) length of cars forming a queue at some junction in some timeframe; and we suggest that as (and if) queues form at your junction you note the maximum queue length (such as 4, 9 or 30 cars) each time a significant queue is formed. For example if six queues are formed through the hour at your junction you record this as follows: Q1, from Mountsorrel road, of max length 7 cars, formed for about 7 minutes starting around 0805; Q2, from Mountsorrel road, of max length 10 cars, formed for about 15 minutes starting around 0817; Q3, from Mountsorrel road, of max length 5 cars, formed for around 4 minutes starting around 0837 Etc. up to Q6 2. time spent (by individual vehicles [and their drivers and passengers] waiting in queues) Explanation- here we are trying to find out how long the people in cars need to wait in queues at your junction Ideally therefore if a queue of any significant length forms please identify the backmost vehicle and time how long that vehicle takes to reach and pass through the junction; Please repeat this as queues form and disappear 3. frequency of queues formulation- (how long did each queue last and/or how often did queues form) Note: If you record the queue lengths & times as indicated in 1, we should be well placed to deduce this information We suggest that you use a sheet of paper with items 1 and 2 listed- such as in the following slide

– Queue Measurements 0800 to Monday 16th 2018 11 vehicles travel through lights within 80 seconds 0804 10 vehicles travel through lights within 100 seconds 0807 0806 8 vehicles travel through lights within 70 seconds 30 vehicles, 28 travel through lights within 100 seconds but 2 take 150 seconds- one instance only 0836 2 vehicle queue travels through lights within 50 seconds 0848 Variable length typically 3 to 10 vehicle queues all travel through lights within 100 seconds Variable length typically 3 to 8 vehicle queues all travel through lights within 100 seconds Variable length typically 3 to 12 vehicle queues all travel through lights within 100 seconds Queue frequency – queues of sizes 1 to 12 vehicles normally re-occur typically repeating every 80 seconds (in the range 45 to 100 seconds- being conditioned by the switching of the lights which itself depends upon the relative traffic loads on the Loughborough, Farley Way and Woodhouse roads) One queue of 30 vehicles occurred once, requiring the trailing vehicles to wait for two light changes General Conclusion– queues at these Fairley Way lights, approaching from Fairway way, seem to be well ordered and all but in one exception were within the UK aim or being within a 2minute wait

47 Loughborough Road Approaching the Traffic Lights from the Quorn Village Centre– Queue Measurements 0705 to Monday 23rd April 2018 Nearly all times in period Queues of variable length typically 3 to 12 vehicle queues all travel through lights within 100 seconds Only one instance of queue of circa 18 vehicles with the last two vehicles taking around 140 seconds to clear Queue frequency – queues of sizes 3 to 12 vehicles normally re-occur; typically repeating every within a max of 80 seconds and normally in the range 45 to 100 seconds- being conditioned by the switching of the lights which itself depends upon the relative traffic loads on the Loughborough, Farley Way and Woodhouse roads) General Conclusion– queues at these Fairley Way lights, approaching from the Quorn Village centre, seem to be well ordered and all but in one exception were within the UK aim or being within a 2minute wait
