England was still not following the Treaty of Paris They had not left the US yet “War Hawks” lead Congress to declaring war British were also fighting Napoleon Treaty of Ghent gave US the victory Biggest battle was Battle of New Orleans occurred after the war was over

I. Monroe Doctrine In early 1800s, Latin American colonies were gaining independence from Spain The colonies were ending mercantilism England began to trade with them After the Napoleonic wars, kings in Europe wanted their colonies back

Encouraged the US to also oppose any new colonies Pres. Monroe warned European nations to stay away Europeans could not make any new colonies in the Western Hemisphere Our military was small, but England’s navy was not

II. Manifest Destiny The belief that Americans had the God-given right to all the land of North America Came from ethnocentric confidence that Americans were better and the rest should get out of the way Gave up some of Oregon just to get to the Pacific

Mexico invited American settlers into Tejas Texans would have to follow Mexican laws Farmed cotton using slaves When Mexico outlawed slavery, the Texans revolted and won their independence Mexico didn’t agree with that

The United States did not annex Texas for 9 years b/c it would be a slave state It was annexed after Polk was elected president in 1844 Polk sent people to Mexico to buy more land, but was sent away

Polk sent US troops into disputed territory Mexico thought this was a hostile act and shots were fired Polk saw this as an act of war Sent troops into Mexico

US easily won and acquired the Mexican Cession: California New Mexico Arizona Nevada Utah Colorado Wyoming
