1 Role and deficiency symptoms of Nitrogen in Mango
Improved yield in mango require balance application of nutrients in proper form. But continuous and imbalanced use of inorganic fertilizers affect the soil health as well yield by: Affecting useful soil microbes and remains of chemical residue become toxic to plants and adversely affecting health of the mango plant. Therefore, it is important to use chemical fertilizers judiciously to get higher yield without affecting soil health. Integrated nutrient management is a good agricultural practices which improves yield in mango without affecting soil health. Before adapting integrated nutrient management practice in mango, it is utmost important to have an idea about the role and deficiency symptoms of different elements on mango . Therefore in this RLO you will learn the role and deficiency symptoms of nitrogen on mango.

2 Objective After completing this lesson, you will be able to :
Learn the role, deficiency and toxicity symptoms of nitrogen in mango

3 Role of Nitrogen in Mango
Nitrogen is one of the most important nutrients for the growth of mango and it has a relevant role in the production and quality of the fruits. It increases the chlorophyll content in the leaves which in turn determines the synthesis of carbohydrates. It increases the CEC of roots and makes them more efficient in absorbing other nutrients.

4 Role of Nitrogen in Mango
It has a relevant role in the production and quality of the fruits. Nitrogen effects are seen principally in the vegetative phase of growth Mango leaves with more than 1.2% N were associated with fruits that had greenish spots on reddish skin. Nitrogen application induced flowering in the following years.

5 Role of Nitrogen in Mango
Induced early flush and encouraged flowering. Early flowering Nitrogen application increases yield and quality of fruits in mango. Adequately nourished mango with N regularly develop shoots, and have viable panicles able to bear fruit. Heavy bearing

6 Deficiency symptoms The most striking symptoms are severe retardation of growth, yellow and under-sized leaves. The fruit set is greatly reduced and leaves mature without attaining normal size. The symptoms first appear near the base of current growth and progress towards the tip. Under the acute deficiency, the fruit size greatly reduced, tended to ripe and drop prematurely. The incidence of physiological disease like softnose is increased with increase in nitrogen fertilization.

7 Deficiency symptoms Nitrogen deficiency may adversely affect yield.
Lack of nitrogen causes retarded development, less vegetative growth and reduced production of fruits. Due to nitrogen deficiency relatively small fruit set associated with leaves that matured without attaining normal size. Reduced fruit size

8 Deficiency symptoms The deficiency symptoms first appeared near the base of current years growth, and progressed towards the tip, new leaves fails to attain normal size. Leaf stalks tended to form narrow angles with the stem. Fruit ripens prematurely and drop prematurely. Nitrogen deficiency caused reduced leaf area and general yellowing

9 Toxicity symptoms Mango leaves with more than 1.2% N were associated with fruits that had greenish spots on reddish skin. Excess of nitrogen causes excessive vegetative growth, difficulty at floral differentiation, loss of yield and fruit quality, and an increased susceptibility to disease.
