PBMAS for Region 11 As of this morning, the 2017 Regional PBMAS reports are not yet available 2015 – 2016 Regional PBMAS Data for CTE: Indicator EOC PL CTE/LEP ELA 3 CTE/SPED Math Science Social Studies 11/18/2018 Presented by Education Service Center Region 11

PBMAS What’s next? Research indicates that academic integration in CTE courses can have a vital impact on student success on standardized tests. Academic integration in the CTE classroom would involve less than 10% of CTE classroom time. Reading, writing, and math skills are vital parts of workplace success. All CTE teachers are charged with including academics in their classrooms. 11/18/2018 Presented by Education Service Center Region 11

17 Presented by Education Service Center Region 11
PBMAS What’s next? What if ? A CTE teacher was paired with an academic core content teacher? The CTE teacher learned how the academic core content is being taught in the academic classroom? CTE students would see the core content in the CTE classroom taught the same way it is taught in the core classroom? Same academic language With real world, hands-on application 11/18/2018 Presented by Education Service Center Region 11

18 Academic Integration & Region 11 . . .
How might this work? Plan a Jump-Start program to help administrators and/or teachers become involved in the initiation of Math in CTE or Literacy in CTE with these steps: Decide upon a core content area for this year Involve an interested pair of teachers (1 CTE, 1 core) to participate in the training 11/18/2018 Presented by Education Service Center Region 11

19 Academic Integration & Region 11 . . .
The Training: Attend a 2-day “Jump-Start” Workshop in the Fall to learn the pedagogy and develop a lesson using CTE content as the basis for enhancing the core content Return to the classroom and present the lesson Meet again at the ESC for a 1-day workshop at mid-year to discuss and refine Return to the classroom to present a lesson developed by another teacher Attend a 1-day workshop at the ESC in the Spring to debrief and reflect Spend time in the Spring session to make plans for a full series to present to a larger group of teachers in a full implementation for the next year 11/18/2018 Presented by Education Service Center Region 11

20 Academic Integration & Region 11 . . .
Considerations: Would your district be willing to commit two teachers (1 CTE, 1 core) to the Jump-Start Program for a total of 4 days during the school year? Would your district be willing to send one person from CTE leadership and one person from academic core leadership to participate as part of program support? What thoughts and concerns do you have about implementation of this initiative? 11/18/2018 Presented by Education Service Center Region 11

21 What are your thoughts, so far?
