1 Do Now Take out the WHIL due today. Copy the HW (exactly like this): Quiz MONDAY on Ch. 1 Section 1! Study your notes, pages 5-9, and vocab. Open the textbook to page 6 and copy the definition for geography onto your vocab sheet. You can find the definition…look for it.

Geography: The study of Earth’s surface and the processes that shape it. Anything in nature, like weather, climate, etc.

3 Connecting Geography and History
What does the Earth have to do with history? Actually, this whole year we are going to look at how the Earth impacts history. Impact means to influence. The Earth and the things that happen in nature have the ability to effect people, places, and events. All of the reasons for why something happens or why something is the way it is can be traced back to geography.

4 On your paper… By yourself….
Think of an important event that happened to you outside.

5 Now discuss… Would that event have been different if the weather had been different? If you were in a different part of the world? Mountains? Ice? Hot?

6 The Connection Between Geography and History
Turn over your worksheet to the chart on the back. I am going to show you a couple of pictures showing a specific place, and having a special kind of geography. For each picture, as a group, discuss and write down what kind of Clothing Shelter Food Resources Each place might have based on what you can see

People living in a cooler climate will need to make shelters that keep them warm. People living near rivers can eat fish for food. People in wood forests can use the wood to build shelters and tools. People in the rain forest may find resources to help repel mosquitos and other bugs.
