National Capital Region – An Overview
The National Capital Region (NCR) as notified covers an area of about 33,578 sq. kms. The area of NCR falls in territorial jurisdictions of 04 states namely Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh & Rajasthan. The Uttar Pradesh Sub-Region comprises of five districts, that is, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budha Nagar, Bulandshahr, and Baghpat together constituting about 32% (10,853 sq. kms.) of the Region.
3
National Capital Region – An Overview
NCR is characterized by the presence of highly ecologically sensitive areas like extension of Aravalli ridge, Forests, Wild life and Bird sanctuaries, rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Hindon etc. NCR is a dynamic rural-urban region being the home of 371 lakhs people living in 108 towns of which 17 are class I cities and more than 7500 rural settlements.

Discharge of untreated sewage causes severe river water pollution and ill health conditions. The newly commissioned STPs installed in Ghaziabad and Noida are based on State of Art latest technology. These STPs are discharging treated sewage with BOD of 10 to 15 mg/l. In Noida & Ghaziabad, the treated Sewage is being recycled and used for irrigation purposes. Directions have been issued to all building construction projects in Noida for the use of treated waste water in construction activities. Source - UPPCB

Air Quality of NCR, UP Sub Region
Sulphur Dioxide and Oxides of Nitrogen are with in the prescribed norms. The RSPM at all the locations is above the prescribed norms. Major Cause of RSPM in Ambient air is vehicular pollution activities/on going construction activities/ road side cuttings for laying of pipes / littered garbage/road side dust. Cleaner Fuel (CNG) for vehicles is being supplied in Ghaziabad, Noida, Greater Noida and Meerut for control of vehicular Pollution. Source - UPPCB

Water Quality of NCR, UP Sub Region
The River Water Quality is marked by low values of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and high values of Bio Chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Coliforms. The Water quality of River Hindon and Kali (E) in Meerut and of River Hindon in Noida is Alarming. The presence of high values of Total Coliforms indicate the state of sewage pollution. Regular Monitoring of Industries is being done in order to ensure proper operation of ETP. Source - UPPCB

Status of Supply of CNG in NCR, UP Sub Region
For improvement in ambient air quality, it is necessary to switch over to cleaner fuel like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in place of conventional fuels like Coal / Diesel etc.. The scenario of CNG supply in cities of National Capital Region is as illustrated below – Ghaziabad CNG is being supplied by M/s IGL. 25 numbers CNG Stations are established. Approximately Kg/day CNG is supplied for Vehicular consumption. CNG is also supplied for domestic house hold/industrial use. Meerut CNG is being supplied by M/s GAIL. 02 numbers CNG Stations are established. Source - UPPCB

Status of Supply of CNG in NCR, UP Sub Region
Noida CNG is being supplied by M/s IGL. 16 numbers CNG Stations are established. Approximately Kg/day CNG is supplied for Vehicular consumption. CNG is also supplied for domestic house hold / industrial usage. Greater Noida 06 numbers CNG Stations are established. Approximately Kg/day CNG is supplied for Vehicular consumption. Source - UPPCB

Future Action Points for Environmental Pollution Control & Monitoring in NCR (UP Sub Region)
Action Plan for improving the overall environmental quality has been made for Ghaziabad and Noida and is under implementation. The activities in action plan cover both long term and short measures for control of water pollution, air pollution and land pollution. The progress of implementation of action plan is being monitored by inter departmental committee of concerned departments headed by District Magistrate. Source - UPPCB
29
Future Action Points for Environmental Pollution Control & Monitoring in NCR (UP Sub Region)
In Ghaziabad & Noida, 02 (01 in each city) Continuous Automatic Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations are proposed to be set up jointly by CPCB & UPPCB on 50:50 cost sharing basis. The cost of each station is Rs crore. UPPCB has sent its acceptance to CPCB on Parameters like PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NOX, CO, Ozone, Benzene, Toluene, and Xyelene will be monitored continuously.
