1 Bell Ringer!!! Let this be the beginning of your notes. I will check your bell ringer during the second half of class! Question: Its 12 A.M., you are walking down a street by yourself and from behind you hear someone say, “Hey, you!”. You turn around to find this guy standing right behind you. What are your thoughts? What do you think this guy is doing? What is your first impression of him? (2-3 Sentences)

3 Perception Cognitive process that enables us to interpret and understand our surroundings.

10 Results of a First Impression
Outcome-The way something turns out in the end. 10 different people will have different outcomes/impressions of a stranger.

11 Primary Effect The tendency to form opinions about others based on first impressions. Example: Students and the Professors

12 Schemas The Primary Effect leads individuals to create schemas.
Set of assumptions that we develop about any person or event. Develop schemas about people we have heard about. Certain events (Funeral/Basketball game)

13 Stereotypes Set of assumptions about people in a given category.
Summarizes our own experiences and beliefs.

14 Attribution Theory The process by which we interpret and explain other’s behavior. You are driving in the left lane in traffic and a car gets right on your tail and starts honking at you. Why do you think they are honking at you?

15 Attribution Theory Internal Attribution External Attribution
Interpret people’s behavior based on their personal characteristics External Attribution Interpret people’s behavior based on the situation they are currently facing.

16 Fundamental Attribution Error
Tendency to over attribute others’ behavior to internal causes and discount the situational factors. When you see a homeless person along side the street, what do you think of them?

17 Actor-Observer Bias Attribute one’s own behavior to outside causes but attribute the behavior of others to internal causes. “YOU ARE A MEAN PERSON!” “I AM HAVING A BAD DAY! IT’S NOT MY FAULT!

18 Self-Serving Bias Tendency to claim success is due to our efforts, while failure is due to circumstances beyond our control.

19 Comic Strip Activity You and your partner must create a comic strip based on each component of social perception below. (Total 2-3) Actor-Observer Bias Self-Serving Bias Fundamental Attribution Error Primary Effect Each comic strip must display a scene where a person or group of people are displaying that component. On the back of each comic, write one paragraph describing what is going on in the scenes.
