2. Brisbane Accord Group (BAG) and the Pacific Vital Statistics Action Plan (PVSAP)
BAG was established in 2010 with the aim of supporting countries to improve their vital statistics and to improve coordination between development partners.
UNFPA, WHO, UNICEF, PHIN (Pacific Health Information Network), ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics), QUT (Queensland University of Technology), UNSW (University of New South Wales),FNU (Fiji National University), SPC
Through this group the PVSAP was developed to support Pacific Island countries in strengthening capacity vital statistics on births, deaths and causes of deaths and to improve their availability, accuracy and use.
The plan sits under the Pacific Ten Year Statistics Strategy, 2011–2020, to

The course is one of a series of trainings that are undertaken by BAG
The plan responds to country priorities and commitments made at various fora:
Heads of Planning and Statistics
Pacific Ministers of Health
Asia Pacific decade of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics ( ) and the follow up Regional Action Framework on CRVS

4. Objectives
Understand what out data looks like, what it can tell us, its key strengths and weaknesses and how make it more useable;
Build proficiency to analyse this data and ensure that we can undertake such analysis within country when required
Develop a VS report to communicate the key stories emerging from the data to our leaders and other stakeholders.
Identify key ways to improve our data and the collection systems and support each other in undertaking these improvements

6. Course structure
Presentations – introduction to the topic, overview of methods and theory
Group work sessions – apply the information to your own data, calculate indicators, document what you did
Discussion - share and explain your data, compare with colleagues, understand regional trends and plausibility

7. Expectations
There is a lot to cover in the 2 weeks – but the task is not impossible.
At the end of the 2 weeks we expect:
That everyone has further developed their analytical and report writing skills
That you will have a draft national report to take back to your committee
You will continue to work with your committee to publish this report as soon as possible.
During the 2 weeks we expect:
You will work as a country team to develop a single national report
That you will be here (and ready to work) during the scheduled times
That you will let us know if you don’t understand the material covered or need us to go over things in a different way.
