So What Are Fixed And Growth Mindsets?
In a growth mindset, people believe that their abilities can be improved significantly through practice and hard work. Students who receive feedback from teachers regarding their effort are more likely to grow their knowledge and take on harder tasks in the future. In a fixed mindset, people believe that their abilities are fixed traits that cannot be developed. Students who receive feedback from teachers regarding their intelligence or talent adopt a fixed mindset and limit their potential to acquire new knowledge.

How Can Teachers Help Students Adopt Growth Mindsets?
Congratulate students on work that is well done by providing oral and written feedback with a focus on praising effort. Use phrases like: “Well done! You are really improving” and “be proud of your hard work.” When you think that students do not complete assignments to the best of their abilities, encourage them to put forth greater effort. Use phrases like: “Keep improving” and “Continue to practice and you will do better.”

Research: A Study On Praise And Mindsets
A study involving over four hundred fifth grade students across the U.S.A. analyzed the impact praise has on children’s development. Students who received compliments regarding effort like, “you must have worked hard at this” were more likely to expand their knowledge and take on harder tasks. Students who were praised for their intelligence with comments such as, “you must be smart at this” limited their potential to acquire new knowledge by not challenging themselves with difficult tasks that might disprove the earlier assessment of their bright intelligence.

Why Encourage Students To Develop Growth Mindsets
It shows that you genuinely care about a student when you recognize their effort and motivate them to continue to try their best. Encouragement is a great tool to help students cope with challenges and motivate them to achieve their goals. It is about reinforcing the mindset that hard work is something to be proud of. When students realise that their teacher appreciates their hard work, they are more inclined to make additional efforts. They feel good about themselves, and this gives them self-confidence.
