2 Introduction Earthquakes are movements or vibrations they are released by the outer layer of earths surface. There is also seismographs and seismograms!A a seismograph detects, measures and records the energy of earthquake vibration. And produces seismograms. A fault is the place where the movement begins called the focus. The focus may lie as far as 700 kilometers (450 miles) below earths surface. When an earthquake begins ,pressure from within Earth causes rocks along faults to move and break. As they move, energy is released as vibrations. These vibrations are called seismic waves or earthquake waves. Seismic waves travel out from the focus in all directions. Seismic waves move through earth and along its surface, they are felt as shakings and vibrations.

3 Primary waves Also know as p waves Fastest waves
First to arrive at distance point Travels through solids, liquids and gases.

4 Secondary Waves Also know as S waves Slower then p waves
Arrives at a later distance point Travels through solids only

5 Surface Waves Also called L waves Slowest waves of all Felt at surface
Cause the most damage

12 Earths Crust Earths most outer layer Thinnest layer We live on it
Solid rock Deeper order oceans than continents

13 Mantle Thickest layer Layer of rock lying below earths crust
Rocks move or flow due to pressure and high tempetures

14 Inner core Solid sphere Center of the earth
Spins at a different rate than the rest of the planet

15 Outer core Made out of melted iron Totally liquid
Inner core floats in this layer

16 Richter scale
