1 Shared Reading Theater
Katz, Claudia Anne and Boran, Karen. (2004). Shared Reading Theatre: An Invitation to the World of Story. p.p Shared Reading Theater

2 What is Shared Reading Theater?
This strategy does not require the use of a script! A variety of texts (novels, short stories, newspaper articles, science text, etc.) can be used. The teacher does not model the fluent reading like in regular Readers’ Theater, but rather takes on a director position or a role in the performance itself. Each student will take on an active role in SRT and less-skilled readers will take on smaller roles.

3 How is this different from…
Shared Reading or Readers’ Theater?

4 Shared Reading Shared reading uses a single text that all readers can see. The teacher models reading in shared reading. In shared reading, every reader reads no matter what their reading ability is.

5 Readers’ Theater A script is required with the Readers’ Theater literacy strategy. The teacher plays the role of director or possibly takes on a role in the script. Only some of the class will take on roles and read while the rest of the class is the audience.

6 Round-Robin Reading How does Shared Reading Theater compare?

7 Round-Robin Reading A “turn-taking” approach to reading
This practice may lead less-skilled readers to feel like they are being singled-out by their inability to read the text smoothly. This strategy uses a common text. The teacher has an observation role and corrects immediately.

8 What else can you do with SRT?
Writing as an Extension Activity Students will take time to offer a response to a reflective question from the perspective of the character they were reading.
