Studbook Keeper News! Keeping Studbook Keepers Up-to-date with the latest News Flashes!

2 What is Studbook Keeper News?
First step towards the community-developed ZIMS vision of integrated, far-more efficient and timely studbook data Previously Studbook Keepers had to rely on institutions responding to periodic questionnaires to provide updated data on their species of interest Studbook Keeper News allows studbook keepers to easily see the current, or historical, events for their species as entered by institutions into their own animal records on ZIMS.

3 Why Does it Matter? Many studbooks are a few years behind in events
Impacts management recommendations, especially for species with short generation periods Many breeding recommendations are relying on outdated information

4 Historical Data Also allows checking for historical data on their species More institutions are joining Species360 and incorporating their data, some which may be quite old, into the Species360 database Studbook Keeper News allows studbook keepers to close some missing gaps and solve pedigree mysteries

5 Into the Future Studbook Keeper News is a working prototype for future, more automatic, studbook updating within ZIMS Starting with basic studbook-information- update service now

6 How do Studbook Keepers get Studbook Keeper News?
Institutions Need to give their staff members who are Studbook Keepers access to ZIMS by making them a ZIMS Users and providing login status Regional Associations – Need to provide Species360 with an updated list Studbook Keeper name Studbook Keeper’s institution Species covered by the studbook

7 Regional Association Studbook Keeper Setup – the winner
Regional Association logs into ZIMS and adds existing ZIMS Users as your regional studbook keepers Species360 can provide training to do this Species360 will work with institutions to get their studbook keepers appropriate ZIMS access Studbook Keepers cannot be added until they have ZIMS access at their facilities

8 Regional Association Studbook Keeper Setup – second place
Regional Association sends Species360 an Excel, or similar file, of their studbook keepers and Species360 will set them up for Species360 member institutions Studbook Keeper name Studbook Keeper’s institution Species covered

9 Regional Association Studbook Keeper Setup – third best
Regional Association does not contact Species360 with the information Species360 will fill in the information with the best data we currently have available to us Difficult and costly for Species360 to track studbooks assigned by each Regional Association Currently 20 Regional Associations with studbooks AZA has ~700 managed studbooks
