1st and 2nd September 2016, Sola City Conference Centre, Tokyo, Japan Item #2: Process & Context Matt Steventon 1. Background 2. This Workshop 3. APRSAF Initiative

2 1 Background Initiative founded as a forum to foster Japan-Australia collaboration. Making the most of Japan’s data streams and Australia’s application capabilities. Focus on applications that benefit from the high temporal and spatial resolution of combined GEO and LEO observations. August 2015 Brisbane workshop on Non-Meteorological Applications for Next Generation Geostationary Satellites. Established Product Teams and identified target products/applications (land, ocean and atmosphere). Web site:

3 2 This Workshop Stimulate discussion on Non-Meteorological Applications for Next Generation Geostationary Satellites and possible demonstration projects to be led by Australia and Japan for the Asia-Pacific region (with product team coordination) Assess: What have the Product Team members achieved individually and together? Are the target products still appropriate? Challenges and opportunities. What is the way forward? Linkage with CEOS GEO-LEO ad-hoc team activities Cooperation with international aid organizations and other related organizations to implement demonstration projects

4 3 APRSAF Initiative Built on focus demonstration projects for the GEO-LEO collaboration: Hotspot/haze monitoring and ocean parameter monitoring (SST, ocean colour). Benefits include: Focusing our work to develop innovative new applications; Practical demonstration of the regional benefits of the Japan-Australia GEO- LEO collaboration; Demonstrate the societal benefits that can be realised from the Himawari programme and highlight ROI for the Japanese taxpayer; Potential commercial and public good opportunities. At this workshop we must develop a work plan covering: goals, requirements, necessary resources, expected outputs/societal benefits, stakeholders, funding opportunities, and milestones.
