2 MARSHALS NO, You do not get a badge and gun! You insure the safety of all involved in the meet! Work with Event Heads Under direction of Meet Management Be Polite, but STERN 11/18/2018

3 Anticipate possible Problems
Broken areas of a runway or throwing circles Standing water A seating area in harms way Overlapping venues, including the track, that was not covered by scheduling Missing pole box collar If the meet is in late evening or at night, do implements get lost in the lights 11/18/2018

4 RESPONSIBILITIES Limit Access to: a. Only Working Officials b. Competitors c. Authorized, credentialed individuals d. Know location of coaches boxes 11/18/2018

5 RESPONSIBILITIES e. Know severe weather procedures f. Introduce yourself to medical staff g. Talk to Chief of event and let him know your location 11/18/2018

6 START AREA Prevent Physical Encroachment Control photographers Prevent Sound Encroachment Protect the starters and competitors 11/18/2018

7 RUNNING EVENTS During Steeplechase – Have a marshal assigned Control photographers Assist with race dropouts 11/18/2018

8 FINISH AREA Secure Finish Area from everyone except competitors So competitors are only ones crossing finish line Protect timing equipment from getting bumped Show athletes where to exit track 11/18/2018

9 FIELD EVENTS Think Safety First!
Limit access to the venue, including likely landing areas beyond sector lines 11/18/2018

10 THROWING EVENTS THERE ARE FALLING IMPLEMENTS THEY ARE DANGEROUS KEEP EVERYONE OUT OF HARMS WAY 11/18/2018

11 JUMPING EVENTS KEEP EVERYONE OFF OF THE RUNWAYS EXCEPT ATHLETES KEEP PHOTOGRAPHERS OUT OF HARMS WAY AT END OF PIT 11/18/2018

12 In event of injury Secure the area to permit access by authorized personnel Once medical arrives, keep all others away, especially the media 11/18/2018

13 ASSIST In enforcement of electronic rules and unauthorized assistance Do not touch an athlete, but inform them of the consequences of their actions 11/18/2018

14 ANTICIPATE Know movement of officials from one location to another, precede them and make sure their next venue is ready 11/18/2018

15 ESCORTS If other escorts are not available, marshals can escort competitors during competition as well as following competition 11/18/2018

16 EQUIPMENT NEEDED Distinctive badge, hat or armband Marshal report form Pens or pencils Sunscreen Water Inclement weather gear 11/18/2018

17 EQUIPMENT NEEDED Paper, pen to make a record of electronics, unsportsmanlike infractions and refusal to follow Marshall’s directions Provide reports to Chief Marshal or Meet Referee 11/18/2018
