2 Reality Check The reality in today’s Job Market is…
YOU are responsible for making decisions about your future. YOU will be competing with other job seekers that have more education and/or experience than you. People who didn't finish high school seem to be bearing the brunt of the country's unemployment crisis: About 1.8 million college graduates have found work since January 2010, the WSJ reports, but 128,000 high school dropouts have lost their jobs during the same period. (The Huffington Post) Ask Youth if they see the importance of a high school diploma? Talk about the value of the diploma or GED for getting a job in this economy’s tough competition such as: Standing out above other applications Better paying jobs More chances of moving up in a company

3 Reality Check One in three youth who start high school will not graduate four years later. (Orfield, Losen, Wald & Swanson, Losing Our Future) In Fresno County, 25.4% of the Youth population does not have a high school diploma in (Fresno Bee) US Average Weekly Earnings in 2012 (Bureau of Labor Statistics)

4 What is the AYOS Youth Program?
The AYOS Youth Program assists youth In-School and Out of School 16-24: Academic Services Career Services THIS WILL LEAD TO, ULTIMATELY, A REWARDING CAREER!!! Tell them that in the next few slides you will be explaining these two areas in depth; Academic Guidance Career Guidance

5 #1 Academic Services Having a solid academic foundation will prepare
you for your career and build your confidence! GAIN Assessments measure Reading and Math Skills and grade levels. Online Tutorials help you raise your Reading and Math levels. High School Diploma, GED and college or advanced training preparation. GAIN – Tests of Adult Basic Education – Most jobs require certain skill levels in math and reading. The GAIN test will measure those levels and help us to match your abilities to the appropriate career or academic path. Tutorials – If your scores in math and reading are below the 10th grade level, we’ll refer you to our tutorial programs to help you bring those grade levels up. We use Skills Tutor Online for tutorial, which you can access tutorial from home, school, or any local youth offices. High School Diploma/GED assistance - If you don’t have your diploma we want to help you get it.

After completing Academic Goals and Career Assessments, we prepare you for the career you are interested in. Explore and Research Career Options Develop Career Goals Job Readiness Workshops Resumes, cover letters and applications How to be aggressive with your job search Interviewing Skills (Mock Interviews) Create your own career portfolio Work Experience- is not guaranteed. Once your academic goals have been met – work experience opportunities may be considered. Explain value of taking time to prepare before going out to “Find a Job” These preparations will give you the edge over other candidates Explain value of Career portfolio.

College and Vocational Training Resource Cal JOBS Labor Market Information Community resources Career Resource Library Explain Resources: College and Vocational Training Resource Labor Market Information: Local high demand/high wage occupations, this is where we use your personal assessment information to pinpoint local career opportunities. Access to Community Resources: Local organizations that also offer youth services Resource Library: Resume books, dress for success, interviewing tips, etc.

11 Commitment to Academic and Career Excellence
Youth Contract AYOS Youth Program focuses on academic excellence and not work experience Your goal is to strive to achieve 2 grade level gains or more. Job readiness and career exploration will be provided once academic goals have been met or significant progress in academics is shown Update your Academic & Career Advisor (ACA) on any barriers that may affect your participation as they arise, and you will also keep the ACA updated on contact information Explain the importance of following through Define commitment- to be loyal. To work very hard to do or support the program.

12 Next Step General Eligibility Requirements
Out-of-School Youth ages or In-School Youth Ages 14-21 Fresno County Resident or attend a Fresno County school Legal Right to Work Low Income Basic Skills Deficient and or High School Drop-Out Selective Service Registration (male 18 and over) Schedule a one on one interview with an eligibility worker today!

WIOA Orientation Initial Eligibility Interview Youth Program Entrance Interview GAIN Assessment Completion of FRWIB Application Refer to other Community Services Note: If you are found not eligible for the youth program you will be referred to another Community Agency that better fits your needs.
