Unit 1: Rational Numbers and Exponents
In mathematics vocabulary is very important Discussion What are real numbers? What are whole numbers? What is a natural number? What is an Integer? What is a rational number What is an irrational number?

Real Numbers Real Numbers are all irrational and rational numbers. Real numbers are the Umbrella that other numbers fall inside of.

Whole Numbers Whole numbers are the numbers beginning with zero and moving to the right . They do not include negative numbers. They are not fractions.

Natural Numbers Natural numbers: There is some debate as to whether natural numbers include zero or not, but basically they are the positive numbers and do not include fractions.

Integers Integers include zero, positive and negative numbers. They do not include fractions.

Rational Numbers Rational Numbers are numbers that can be written as a ratio of two integers. A fraction containing a numerator and denominator that are integers. Every integer is a rational number. It comes from the word ratio. (1.75, .999).

Irrational Numbers Any real number that is not a rational number and not an imaginary number. The square root of 2 because it cannot be written as a ratio of two integers. Pi is also an irrational number.

Imaginary Number A number that when squared gives a negative result.
