5 Unit 3: Integration Station: The Nervous System
The Spinal Cord Part of the Central Nervous System (CNS) that conducts nerve impulses to and from the brain. Unit 3: Integration Station: The Nervous System Slide 7.11

6 The Spinal Cord FUNCTIONS
1. Conduction of nerve impulses. Two way communication system between the brain and the body – PATHWAYS or TRACTS. ASCENDING TRACTS – Carry sensory info TO the brain DESCENDING TRACTS – Send MOTOR impulses from the brain to MUSCLES & GLANDS. 2. Spinal Reflexes PATELLAR and Withdrawal Unit 3: Integration Station: The Nervous System

7 Unit 3: Integration Station: The Nervous System
The Spinal Cord Structure The spinal cord is a slender nerve column that passes downward from the brain into the vertebral canal. Consists of 31 segments, each of which gives rise to a pair of spinal nerves. Unit 3: Integration Station: The Nervous System Slide 7.11

8 Unit 3: Integration Station: The Nervous System
Parts & Functions Foramen Magnum: Opening in the occipital bone of the skull where – spinal cord connects to brain. Spinal Nerves: Branch to various body parts connecting them with the CNS. Vertebral Canal: Contains the spinal cord. Cervical Enlargement: Supplies to nerves to upper limbs. Lumbar Enlargement: Supplies nerves to lower limbs. Unit 3: Integration Station: The Nervous System Slide 7.11
