1 National Science Foundation (NSF)
An U.S. federal funding agency: support all scientific disciplines except for medicine sciences Basic scientific research: process studies Discovery/curiosity driven: no mission in mind Community directed: no top-down mandates Proposal based: peer/community assessments National Science Board review guidelines: 1) intellectual merit; 2) broader impacts. Cross-agency, cross-country efforts are encouraged to meet national, international, and societal needs.

2 Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences
Furthers understanding of weather, climate and the solar-terrestrial system by expanding the fundamental knowledge of the composition and dynamics of the Earth’s atmosphere and geospace environment Supports large, complex facilities required for research in the atmospheric and solar-terrestrial sciences

3 Division of Polar Programs
manages and initiates National Science Foundation funding for basic research and its operational support in the Arctic and the Antarctic. has two science sections- one for the Arctic and the Antarctic. A third section manages the logistics and support operations including field stations, camps, laboratories, ships, and airplanes.
