Romanticism English 102

Meaning When you hear the word Romanticism, you may think it was a time where everyone was writing love notes to each other and being more romantic than usual. However, Romanticism actually “emphasized the individual, the subjective, the irrational, the imaginative, the personal, the spontaneous, the emotional, the visionary, and the transcendental.”

Confliction Romanticism went against the principles of the Enlightenment, which were more focused on reason and order.

Origin Romanticism began in France and Britain in the early 1800’s and prospered for a while.

Artists The artists who formed Romanticism begins from people like Baron Antoine Jean Gros and went on until Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres.

Artists During the period of Romanticism, paintings began to reference different things than usual and they mainly emphasized nature. To the Romantics, nature was seen as “unpredictable” which was the opposite of “order.” The goal of their paintings was to evoke emotion among those who see it- whether it made people scared, or happy, or depressed, it was an emotion, and it was different than what they were used to.

Artists For Romantics to communicate their mental and emotional state, they began to draw portraits which helped the people see how the artist is feeling.

Music Even composers began using their music to express their emotions and feelings. Composers found their influence through reading poetry, literature, and so on. Their music began to be more difficult to play and had developed new style of melodies.

Literature Literature began to focus more on the individual and feelings of the author. Poetry began to be considered the best if it had a vast amount og emotions and feelings expressed throughout it.

conclusion Overall, Romanticism was a movement that affected almost everyone in either a good way or a bad way. It is why we focus more on the individual nowadays and why sometimes, we are more emotional than reasonable.
