The key steps in the viral life cycle are indicated at the left. The approximate positions of the blocks are indicated at the right. The genes responsible for these blocks are as follows: receptor block, Fv4, possibly SDF-1; uncoating block, TRIM5α (Lv1, Ref1); DNA deamination, APOBEC3G; trafficking block, Fv1; and RNA degradation, ZAP.
