3 The Mole

4 What is a mole? Commonly abbreviated mol
SI unit used to measure the amount of substance The amount in a mole is 6.02 × 1023 particles 1 mol = 6.02 × 1023 particles (Avogadro's number)

5 What kinds of things? Number of atoms is for an element
Number of formula units is for an ionic compound Number of molecules is for a compound that is covalently bonded

6 Example 1 Given 4.25 mol of sodium chloride, determine the number of formula units.

7 Calculate the number of molecules in 12.6 mol of sulfer dioxide (SO2).
Example 2 Calculate the number of molecules in mol of sulfer dioxide (SO2).

8 How many moles are in 6.75 × 1024 atoms of nickel (Ni)?
Example 3 How many moles are in 6.75 × atoms of nickel (Ni)?

9 Example 4 How many moles are in 6.78 x 1023 formula units of magnesium chloride?
