3. Louisiana Purchase, 1803
The US gained the Louisiana Territory in 1803 by buying it from Napoleon, the French emperor, for $15 million.
The territory doubled the size of the US, gave the US the port of New Orleans, and expanded the power of the President
The Lewis and Clark Expedition explored the vast territory, which laid the groundwork for the expansion westward of the US.

4. Purchase of Florida, 1819
The US gained the Florida territory by purchasing it from Spain in 1819 for $5 million.
By purchasing the territory, the US was now complete East of the Mississippi.

5. Oregon Territory, 1848 What will be the impact of gaining this land?
The territory was under joint control of the US and Great Britain. In 1848, a treaty was signed between the two countries effectively cutting the territory in half.
At this time, large numbers of pioneers caught “Oregon Fever” and crossed the mile Oregon Trail in covered wagons.
Most pioneers continued on to Oregon after crossing the Rockies, but many took the California Trail to settle, even though it was part of Mexico.

6. Label the territory on your
Annexation of Texas, 1845
An increasing number of Anglos into the Mexican territory of Texas raised Mexican fears of losing the region, so Anglo immigration was outlawed.
Anglo settlers tried to negotiate with Mexico on letting in more settlers, but Mexico refused. So Texans declared and won their independence in 1836.
Texas wanted the US to annex it, but was prevented by political opposition to it
In 1845, Congress and President Polk annexed Texas in order to continue America’s westward progress.

7. Mexican Cession,
Dispute over the territory broke out between the US and Mexico shortly after Texas annexation. It centered around the southern Texas border.
President Polk declared war on Mexico. US troops marched into Mexico City, defeating Mexico.
Mexico was forced to cede a vast amount of territory. The US agreed to pay Mexico $15 million for the area.
