1 War with Mexico Polk’s War Plan Polk had a 3 part plan for the War:
Drive Mexican forces out of the disputed Texas area and secure the border. Seize New Mexico & California. Take Mexico City.

2 War with Mexico Polk’s War Plan
Gen. Zachary Taylor accomplished the first goal capturing Matamoros & Monterrey. Taylor then captured Buena Vista securing the Texas border.

3 War with Mexico Polk’s War Plan
Gen. Stephen Kearney took troops into New Mexico and California. He captured Santa Fe 18 Aug without firing a shot with the Mexican governor fleeing Santa Fe. He then headed across Arizona and into California. Quiz12-3B

In June of 1846 a small group of Americans seized Sonoma, CA and called it the independent republic of California. They called it the Bear flag Republic because the flag showed a bear with a star on a white background.

Col. John C. Fremont and Kit Carson joined the Americans in Sonoma. Fremont was unaware the U.S. was at war with Mexico, but declared he would conquer California. The Californios or Mexicans who lived in California were outraged by the acts of Fremont. They saw it as Americans seizing land.

In July of 1846 Commodore John Sloat capture the ports of Monterrey and San Francisco and declared California annexed to the U.S. The American Flag then replaced the Bear flag in California.

7 War with Mexico Naval Intervention
Sloat’s fleet then sailed south with Fremont and Kit Carson Capturing San Diego and then moving into Los Angeles. Mean time Gen. Stephen Kearney’s forces moved west from Santa Fe.

The Californios rose up in rebellion in San Diego against the Americans who had taken the city. Kearney arrived in the middle of the rebellion with fierce fighting, but Kearney put the rebellion down. January 1847 California was under total control of the United States.

Polk’s first two goals had been met with victories in New Mexico, California and Texas. Polk authorized Gen. Winfield Scott to take Mexico City the third part of his plan.

In March 1847 Gen. Scott landed at the Mexican port of Veracruz. Scott laid siege to Veracruz for 3 weeks before marching 300 miles to Mexico City

The American forces had to fight their to way to Mexico City against not only the Mexican military but also militia groups of armed citizens.

By mid September of 1847 General Scott had taken Mexico City and the Mexican government surrendered .

Peace talks began in January of 1848 with the Treaty of Hildago signed in February 1848. Mexico would give up all claims to Texas, agree to the Rio Grande as the border

Mexico ceded (gave) its provincial territories of New Mexico and California to the U.S. and in turn the U.S. would give Mexico $15 million

16 War with Mexico The Peace Treaty
In 1853 the U.S. would pay Mexico another $10 million for the Gadsden Purchase which would be a strip of land along the southern borders of New Mexico and Arizona. With the Gadsden Purchase the U.S. mainland would reach its present size. 12-3C Quiz
