2 What is a Fresco? It is any of several related mural painting types, created on fresh plaster applied to walls or ceilings. The word fresco comes from the Italian word affresco, which comes from the Latin word for "fresh". Frescoes have been made since ancient times. This technique was also very popular during the Renaissance (the times of Michelangelo and Da Vinci). 2

4 Greece The earliest known examples frescoes date at around BC and are to be found on the island of Crete. 4

6 The most famous of these, “The Toreador”, depicts a sacred ceremony in which individuals jump over the backs of large bulls. 5

Delphic Sibyl, detail of a fresco by Michelangelo, 1508–12 The Delphic Sibyl was a woman from before the Trojan Wars (c. 11th century BC) mentioned by Pausanias writing in the 2nd century AD about stories he had heard locally. 15 The Fresco Technique is still used today in Churches, Villas, Taverns and even some schools.
Sometimes people confuse Murals and Graffiti with Frescoes. There is a big difference though… 14
