3 Directions Take out a piece of paper. Look at the task to the right and complete this in 3 minutes. Write as many famous people that you can think of. Connect an event to 5 of your famous people.

10 People Are Famous Because:
They make a lasting contribution to society. Did something extremely horrible. Entertained us. Discovered or developed something innovative. Was the first to do something. Created change.

11 What is History? What is history? Written record of past events.
History contains facts- events that can be verified (proven). Facts are verified from eye-witness accounts, majority agrees on details, artifacts and documentation.

12 Fact- WWII Atomic Bomb Fact: Two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were two cities that were devastated. The United States dropped the bombs.

13 Interpretation/Perspective
Japan- This was a horrible event. Needless and destructive. Innocent people were slaughtered.

14 Interpretation/Perspective
United States- The dropping of the atomic bombs saved American lives and ended a war that would have killed even more Japanese than the bomb. It was a necessary thing to do.

15 Using your brain! Always remember that there are two sides to every story. As we study the events of our nation remember to always put this in perspective.

Is authority always right? The causes and battles of the Revolutionary War.

Why do we need rules? Creating a nation built on freedom and rights.

Why do people choose sides? Political parties.

Is more always better? From sea to shining sea… Moving west.

How can differences unite? The causes and battles of the Civil War. Reconstructing the country.

22 You are a part of history!!!
How do our actions now help shape history? History is something that is always evolving/changing. Individuals and groups shape the direction of history. What are some major issues that we are facing today?

24 Your Task Create a bumper sticker that explains what history is!
Choose an event that has changed the course of history, or has inspired you, and create a bumper sticker about it. Your bumper sticker must: Finish the sentence History Is… Have a picture of an historical event that matches what history is to you. Be fully colored
