Civil Rights Act of 1964

2. What is the civil rights act?
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a revolutionary piece of legislation in the United States that effectively outlawed discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, or national origin, including all forms of segregation.

3. Title 1: voting rights
This provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 barred unequal application of voter registration requirements.

4. Title ii: public accommodations
This particular provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited discrimination in motels, hotels, theatres, restaurants and all other public accommodations which were engaged in interstate commerce.

5. Title iii: State and local governments
Outlawed state and municipal governments from barring access to public facilities because of an individual’s religion, gender, race, or ethnicity.

6. Title iv: desegregation of public schools
Encouraged the desegregation of public schools and authorized the U.S. Attorney General to file suits to enforce said act.

7. Title vi: federal funds
Prevents discrimination by government agencies that receive federal funds. If an agency is found in violation of Title VI, that agency may lose its federal funding.
Discrimination on the ground of race, color, or national origin shall not occur in connection with programs and activities receiving Federal financial assistance

8. Title vii: employment
Prohibits discrimination by covered employers on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender, pregnancy, age, disability, or national origin.
Title VII also prohibits discrimination against an individual because of his or her association with another individual of a particular race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, such as by an interracial marriage.
