1 Math 801A: Mat Plans and 3-view Orthographic Projections
Spatial Sense March 15th, 2017

2 Lesson Introduction Today I will...
build my awareness of spatial sense construct shapes from mat plans and 3-view orthographic projections create 3-view orthographic projections from mat plans and vice versa

3 What is spatial sense? Spatial sense is the intuitive awareness of one’s surroundings and the objects in them. Geometry helps us represent and describe objects and their interrelationships in space. A strong sense of spatial relationships and competence in using the concepts and language of geometry also support understanding of number and measurement.

4 Importance of Spatial Sense

5 Importance of Spatial Sense

6 What is spatial sense? Spatial sense is necessary for understanding and appreciating the many geometric aspects of our world. Insights and intuitions about the characteristics of two- dimensional shapes and three-dimensional figures, the interrelationships of shapes, and the effects of changes to shapes are important aspects of spatial sense. People develop their spatial sense by visualizing, drawing, and comparing shapes and figures in various positions.

7 Video Explanation

8 Practice / Review Miss Hoffmann wants to see what you might already know intuitively about spatial sense. Can you sketch out a model for how some common 3D shapes might be represented as 2D objects? E.g. cube, cone, rectangular prism, cylinder.

9 Practice / Review Complete the three worksheets (handed-out) to the best of your abilities. If you have finished the worksheets, try constructing a cube out of the 2D net plan provided. Try making a cube pattern (similar to page 2 of the review worksheets) to challenge your friends with!

10 Constructing Shapes from Mat Plans
Being able to represent the shape of a 3D object on a 2D surface is very important as it allows others to interpret the object’s shape. This information can then be used to construct the object.

11 Constructing Shapes from Mat Plans
Mat plans are one of the simplest methods to represent 3D objects. Work through the activity on pg 4-3 using the provided cube-a-links. 3 1 1 1 1

12 3-view Orthographic Projections

13 Constructing 3-view Projections
Work through #1-10 (pg 4-4 to 4-11) using the provided cube-a-links.

14 Homework! Reminder: Unit Conversion Assignment due Friday:
Pg 56, #1 all Pg 57, #2 all
