1 Hints 10. He was born September 9, 1890, in Henryville, Indiana. 9. He learned to cook starting at age 6, and dropped out of school in the 6th grade. 8. He worked as a fireman, farmhand, insurance salesman, army mule-tender, amateur obstetrician, aspiring lawyer, political candidate, gas station manager, and restaurateur. 7. At age 40, he started his famous business during the Great Depression by selling “sizzling steaks, fried chicken, country ham, and hot biscuits” out of his service station to hungry travelers. 6. In 1939, his hotel/restaurant was destroyed by a fire and he had to start all over again. 5. In 1955 an interstate was built that caused travelers to bypass his restaurant. At age 65 he had to move his restaurant and start all over again. 4. He believed using a pressure cooker would fry food faster than a frying pan. 3. After his death, one of his white suits and black clip-on bow-tie were sold at auction for $21, In 1950, he was commissioned as a colonel by Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon. 1. His fried chicken is “finger lickin’ good”.

2 Harland David Sanders Your text here He was born September 9, 1890.
Become famous at the age of 65 when his restaurant franchise became successful around the world.

3 Accomplishments At age 6, his father died. His mother had to enter the workforce to support the family, leaving Harland to take care of his siblings. This is when he had to learn to cook. By age 7, he had mastered several local types of cuisines. In 1930 he began cooking for hungry travelers at his gas station. He invented the “home meal replacement” where he sold complete meals to busy families. He called it, “Sunday Dinner, Seven Days a Week”. In 1952 he was so confident in his fried chicken that he made it into a franchise. Less than ten years after he started the franchise he had 600 franchises throughout the U.S. and Canada. In 1964 Sanders sold his company for a staggering $2 million. He was later sued by the new owners for starting “Claudia Sander’s Dinner House” where his fried chicken was served. He traveled 250,000 miles per year visiting all his restaurants in more than 100 countries around the world. In 1980 he was struck by leukemia and died at the age of 90.

4 Plan/Philosophy

5 Passion He not only had a passion for cooking, but a passion for taking care of others. Everything he attempted was in the service of others. Even after he sold his company and was a multi-millionaire, he visited his stores around the country and asked if he could go back into the kitchen and make fried chicken. Persistence By the age of 65, Sanders had lost 2 restaurants, one to fire and the other to an interstate that cut off his customers. He lived on nothing but his Social Security check, and started his business all over again. If he had given up at this point, KFC would never have been the successful business it is today.

7 per·sist·ence noun - firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. My family was forced out of our home when I was very young. I had to work to support them. My mother died. I failed in my first attempt in business. I ran for state legislature and lost. In the same year… I lost my job. I wanted to go to law school but I couldn't get in. I borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year I went bankrupt. I spent the next 17 years of my life paying off this debt. I ran for state legislature again – and won.

8 I became engaged to be married, but my sweetheart died and it broke my heart.
I had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months. I sought to become speaker of the state legislature and lost. I sought to become elector and lost. I ran for Congress and lost. I ran for Congress again and this time I won. I went to Washington and people tell me I did a good job. I ran for re-election to Congress but I lost. I not only lost, I got less than 100 votes. I ran for U.S. Senate again - again I lost.

9 At the age of 51, I was elected president of the United States.
Who am I?
