1 Naming Ionic Compounds
Chemical Bonding

2 Lewis Structures

3 What to know about Ionic Bonds
Ionic compounds are made up of? The electrons are being? What is written first? Opposite charges will?

4 How to write a formula S.O.S Ionic Formulas
Overall net charge must equal zero. S.O.S Symbols -> Oxidation # -> Simplify Don’t show charges in the final formula.

5 Writing Formula Practice
Potassium Chloride K Cl-1  KCl Aluminum Bromide Al Br -1  AlBr3 Beryllium Sulfide Be S-2  BeS (Simplify)

6 How to write a name Write the name of the Cation (Metal) first. It comes straight off the periodic table. Change ending of the Anion (Nonmetal) to end in - ide. 2Al O  Al2O3 Aluminum Oxide

7 Formula and Name Practice
2Al O  Al2O3 Aluminum Oxide Formula Name Na3P CaS Sodium Oxide Barium Phosphide Lithium Nitride

8 How to write a formula with transition metals
When a Transition metal is involved in the bond, you must identify which form of the atom is bonding. These atoms can have different oxidation numbers. Look for the Roman Numeral in the name when writing the formula. The Roman numeral is the oxidation number of the transition metal. Copper (II) Fluoride Cu F  CuF2

9 Writing Formula Practice
Copper (II) Fluoride Cu F  CuF2 Formula Name Copper (I) Oxide Iron (III) Phosphide Manganese (V) Fluoride Zinc Phosphide Nickel Oxide

10 How to write a name with transition metals
When naming the compound, you must balance the total charge, must be zero! Look at the Anion. Determine the total sum of the charge provided by the Anion. Look at the Cation. Remembering that the sum of the ionic compound must equal zero, determine the positive charge, and roman numeral. Copper (II) Fluoride Cu F  CuF2

11 Writing Names Practice
Copper (II) Fluoride Cu F  CuF2 Formula Name Cu3N Ti3P2 SnO MnF3 TiO2

12 How to write a formula with polyatomic ions
If you have a compound with a polyatomic ion, the name will have a different ending using either (-ate) or (-ite) Use your polyatomic ions chart to determine the ion When writing formulas, keep these ions in parentheses if there is more than one polyatomic

13 Writing Formula Practice
Sodium Nitrate Na NO  NaNO3 Formula Name Magnesium Nitrate Sodium Nitrite Aluminum Phosphate Barium Sulfate Ammonium Fluoride

14 How to write a name with polyatomic ions
Look for more than two elements. That’s means a Polyatomic is present. Match up the polyatomics and write the correct names and ending straight from the chart.

15 Writing Names Practice
Sodium Nitrate Na NO  NaNO3 Formula Name Na2SO4 Al2(SO3)3 CaCO3 NH4Cl CuC2H3O2
