Simple LED Driver Solution Single-Wire Digital Interface
FAN562x Key Advantages Simple LED Driver Solution Single-Wire Digital Interface Small Package Size When visiting customers and introducing them to FAN562x, explain these 3 key advantages/strengths to customer’s engineers to reinforce the value FAN562x brings to their designs
7
1. Simple LED Driver Solution
FAN562x products are easy to design linear LED drivers Only requires 2 external passive components Input capacitor Resistor – to set maximum LED current No EMI noise issues Simple and easy PCB layout FAN562x family of linear LED drivers are very easy to design in projects as it only requires an input capacitor and resistor to set the maximum full scale LED current These parts are linear devices and “act” like LDOs and become more efficient when the battery voltage goes down. There are no EMI issues unlike boost converter solutions.
8
2. Single-Wire Digital Interface
Simple to use interface to dim LEDs and turn FAN562x on and off Apply series of digital pulses to CTRL pin to dim LEDs Count-down dimming steps 32 linear dimming steps A very easy to use and implement solution to dim the LEDs and turn the device on or off. It is set up as a count-down format so to dim the LEDs, a series of digital pulses from the processor needs to be applied to FAN562x parts. It cannot count up so to start at a higher LED brightness level, more digital pulses need to be inputted to get back to the highest brightness level. There are a total of 32 brightness levels and are linear.

3. Small Package Size Smallest package sizes for 4 and 6 channel linear LED drivers in market FAN5624 = 1.4 x 1.8mm = 2.52mm2 FAN5626 = 1.6 x 2.1mm = 3.36mm2 Competitors’ next smallest package for either 4 or 6 channel linear LED drivers is 2.0 x 2.0mm = 4.00mm2 59% larger than FAN5624 19% larger than FAN5626 MIC2844A FAN5626 FAN5624 The FAN5624 and FAN5626 are the smallest form factor linear LED driver products in the market today and occupy 2.52mm^2 and 3.36mm^2 respectively. Competing solutions are at least 4mm^2 or higher. FAN5622 is pin-to-pin compatible with AHK3292 from AATI.

Cannot Operate with Low VIN No PWM Dimming
FAN562x Objections Lower Efficiency Cannot Operate with Low VIN No PWM Dimming These 3 objections or barriers that may be encountered when visiting customers who balk at using FAN562x in their design The following slides provides counter arguments to these objections
11
1. Lower Efficiency FAN562x devices are very efficient linear LED drivers Very low drop-out voltage of 50mV to ensure enough headroom for LEDs with higher forward voltage Li-Ion batteries operate most of time between 3.6V to 3.8V FAN562x devices would operate with very little power loss and efficiency would remain high – ratio of output voltage to input voltage Battery Discharge Curve for Sanyo’s 600mAh and 750mAh Li-Ion Batteries FAN562x devices have very low drop-out characteristics to ensure longer operation before the input voltage falls below the forward voltage of the LED. Also Li-Ion batteries typically operate between 3.6V to 3.8V for most of the time before it needs to be recharged and usually when there is no charge left, the voltage falls off rather quickly.
12
1. Lower Efficiency Avg. Efficiency = 85% to 90%
Efficiency curve of FAN562x products with LED forward voltage of 3.2V.
13
2. Cannot Operate with Low VIN
FAN562x parts have very low drop-out voltage to ensure that there is sufficient headroom for the forward voltage of LEDs ~50mV Most portable electronics tend to shut down at 3,2V to 3.3V If there is a need to operate at low input voltage then charge pump or boost LED drivers would be a better solution FAN5701 & FAN5702 FAN5341 & FAN5343 FAN562x LED drivers have very low drop-out voltage which enable it to operate very close to the VIN relative to the forward voltage of the LED. These parts have a drop-out voltage of 50mV. Most portable electronics that use Li-Ion batteries tend to shutdown at 3.2V to 3.3V. If there is a concern with needing to operate with a low input voltage then Fairchild has both charge pump and series boost LED drivers that can be used instead.
14
3. No PWM Dimming FAN562x devices were designed using a simple single-wire interface to dim LEDs If PWM dimming is required then the FAN561x family of linear LED drivers is recommended FAN562x devices use linear dimming methodology rather than PWM. If there is a requirement for PWM dimming then designers can use Fairchild’s FAN561x product family of linear LED drivers.
