Intro:
We want to thank all of the volunteers, members of Green Umbrella, and all the organizations that work tirelessly year-round to have Greater Cincinnati recognized as one of the top 10 most sustainable metro areas in the nation by We’re building the community and collaboration around environmental sustainability that is needed for us to keep moving forward, faster. We’re already top rated for our parks, outdoor recreation, trees, water trails, and growth in bike commuting. We’re excited about the momentum we are building, and how much more we will accomplish in the coming year, especially as we focus on food waste.
To that end we are happy to announce some next steps as a follow up to the forum. We will be seeking to hire a part time coordinator to help build off today’s work to help the Tri-state region to further refine and achieve our food waste reduction goals. While we already have part of the funding support in place, we are seeking additional funds for this effort. Anyone who is interested and able to offer any financial support, please talk with anyone from the Planning Committee.
Additionally we would like to announce an event happening here at Xavier next week. On November 11th and 12th , Xavier is hosting the second annual Ohio Hunger Dialogues. The Dialogues are designed to bring together Universities, community partners, civic leaders, and the public to address and seek solutions to the issue of hunger in our local and global communities through teaching, research, and service. For more information please go to xavier.edu/community-engaged-learning. We will post the link to registration on the Food Waste Forum website.
We will also post a variety of resource links on our website, along with the slides from today’s presentations, including the draft plan and the Strawberry video.

3. Education Campaign to Reduce Food Waste
Prevention of wasted food is the ultimate goal.  
Increasing awareness, educating and creating new norms  
Leveraging existing infrastructures, resources, and expertise to craft best practices to reduce food loss in all areas from farm to fork, i.e., gleaning, off-spec promotion, meal-planning, plate-sizing, proper storage, waste measurement, and standardizing food labeling. 
Identifying partners to help grow the messaging

4. Recovery Infrastructure and Logistics
How do we expand food network capability and simplify logistics and understanding of donating wasted food?
Discussion of a range of approaches to support food recovery and distribution:
Improve existing infrastructure and logistics networks
Expand/integrate network of businesses, farmers, institutions and residents
Improved tools to educate and simplify donations process (website, apps)
Discuss existing as well as needed laws and policies to increase ease of donation

5. Organics Recycling  
Developing an effective infrastructure that can divert food waste from landfills is critical to meet national food waste reduction goals.
Discussions to include:
How can we create viable aerobic and anaerobic solutions that address the needs of residential, institutional and commercial sectors at different scales?
How can we ensure these solutions effectively foster diversion while preventing contamination and nuisance issues?
What barriers exist (legal, infrastructural, logistical)? Who should lead on regional solutions (private, public or private-public partnership)? What markets exist for finished compost, digestate and biogas?
