1 What are this cartoons showing? Do you agree with them?

2 LO: To understand that there is a potential for conflict to occur between water users both within a country and internationally

3 Where do you think water wars are most likely to occur?
Between 1948 and 2008, out of nearly 2000 international ‘events’, only 25% led to any form of conflict, and only 1.5% cause serious wars. Of these conflicts, nearly ⅔ were about the quantity of water available, especially where the upstream users had diverted or planned to divert water in a river basin at the expense of lower basin users. The other common source of conflict was about the building of dams and diversion canals and their ecological impacts. While there has been many military and terrorist actions threatening to destroy dams, cut off water supplies, or deliberately pollute water sources, the reality is that most action has been in the form of political campaigns and protests. Put WPI for USA in and print for students

4 Conflict within a country - The Colorado
7 states covered : Wyoming Colorado New Mexico Arizona California Nevada Utah Las Vegas 1.8 million Colorado 1 of the bread basket states Hoover Dam Glen Canyon Dam Mojave Desert Phoenix – 1.5 million residents Salt water : Pacific Ocean and gulf of California Why do you think conflict here is a possibility?

5 Conflict within a country - The Colorado
Colorado Compact 1922, allocated the water rights between the different states 1920’s ‘law of the River’ divided the river into the Upper basin states, who had responsibility to supply the lower states Over time new treaties have been signed and Mexico has also been involved Now there is a ‘giant plumbing system’, with more than 10 major dams to give water to over 30 million people Lots of the treaties were established in the 1920’s, since then population, industry and climate here have all changed

6 International conflicts - The Nile
The Blue and White Nile provide Egypt with vital water supplies, but 85% come from other countries. All the following are in the Nile basin: Burundi D.R.Congo Egypt Eritrea Ethiopia Kenya Rwanda Sudan Tanzania Uganda All have rising population and want to irrigate their agriculture to help feed the population and develop

7 International conflicts - The Nile

8 Lesson Task You need to produce an A3 fact file on an example of your choice. This needs to have maps/diagrams that are labelled and referred to and it must be full of information. You need to include: Background information area you are researching - maps etc Why the water is divided in that way Why was water divided in the first place Was this a fair way to divide the water Why is it important for all areas to get a fair share of the water? Who are they key players involved in the water issue and what are their views? Is there a possibility of conflict? If so who will the conflict be between? If not why do you feel that is the case? How could this possible conflict be resolved? Are there are treaties involved? If so what are they? Have they been updated? Think: Players, Attitudes and Actions, Futures and Uncertainties. Add any other information that you feel is important. You need to put your fact file on google classroom before next lesson. Remember your peers will be using your work for revision.

9 Past exam questions on water & conflict
Using names examples, assess the potential for water supply to become a source of conflict. Using named examples, assess the extent to which conflict over water supplies is inevitable. Using named examples, assess the extent to which the development of transboundary water sources always leads to conflict.
