8 NEWTONS 1st LAW Law of inertia
Says “objects in motion stay in motion unless they are acted on by a net force”. If net force is “0”, an object at rest will stay at rest.

9 Force changes motion Inertia is the property of an object that resists changes in motion. Objects with more mass have more inertia and are more resistant to changes in their motion. Forces can: increase or decrease the speed of an object change the direction an object is moving Which ball has more inertia?

10 CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING #1
A car drives along the highway at constant velocity. Find the car’s weight and the friction force if the engine produces a force of 2,000 newtons between the tires and the road and the normal force on the car is 12,000 N. Does the car have balanced or unbalanced forces on it? Name all 4 forces acting on the moving car. Solve.

11 NEWTONS 2nd LAW Says “the amount of acceleration depends on both the force and the mass”. Force = Mass × Acceleration Larger the force, more acceleration Larger the mass, less acceleration

12 Newtons 2nd Law: F= M × A If twice the force is applied, the acceleration is twice as great.

13 Newtons 2nd Law: F= M × A An object with twice the mass will have half the acceleration if the same force is applied.

14 HOW TO USE THE EQUATION PYRAMID
Add to your notes: F = force = Newtons (N) M = mass = kilograms (kg) A = acceleration = m/s² F M A Cover up the variable you want to solve for!

15 CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING #2
A car has a mass of 1,000 kilograms. If a net force of 2,000 N is exerted on the car, what is its acceleration? Looking for: Given: Equation: Solution:

16 NEWTONS 1st Law Activity
In this experiment you will try to drop a tennis ball on a target as you run past the target. Think it’s easy? Before you begin, try to guess what will happen. Try to figure out when you will need to release the ball in order to hit the target. Think of the challenges Air Force pilots had before the invention of the guided missiles that are used today. Pilots in World War II had to understand mathematics in order to drop bombs on targets while causing as little harm as possible to surrounding buildings and people.

17 NEWTONS 1st Law Activity (Reflection)
Think about how the runners released it: Did they apply force? Did they throw it? What was the balls motion before it was released? What is the only force acting on the ball once it was released? How did the ball fall once it was released?

18 2nd law media clip MEDIA CLIP Fill in the blanks on your student sheet

19 TASK 1: Vocabulary Flip Chart #2
TASK # ___________ need to be completed by the end of class. TASK 2: SKILL SHEET TASK 1: Vocabulary Flip Chart #2 Show your work! (on back if needed) NO WORK = NO CREDIT Newton Friction Net Force Balanced Force Equilibrium Normal Force *Word, definition, visual TASK 3: Pg.141 #2-5 Write questions & ANSWERS (DRAW Pictures IF NEEDED) Ms. King will tell you where to complete this assignment
