Excitation of mitral cells (MC) leads to activation of GABAergic Blanes cells (BC) through glutamate release at axon collaterals. Blanes cells in turn inhibit granule cells (GC), which themselves inhibit mitral cells at dendrodendritic synapses (circled). Inhibition of granule cells by Blanes cells could disinhibit mitral cells. (+) and (−) indicate excitatory and inhibitory synapses, respectively.
