3 Kairos is: an interdenominational Christian ministry reaching out to incarcerated individuals, their families and those who work with them; to bring sustainable meaning and hope in the place of loneliness, isolation and despair a Greek word meaning in "God's Special Time" indicating an opportunity to reconsider life choices

4 Kairos is: a mission in our own back yards
Christian in nature, although no religious affiliation is necessary to be a participant accomplished through three distinct yet interdependent programs, Kairos Inside; Kairos Outside and Kairos Torch (Inside and Outside programs are run separately for men and women)

5 Kairos Inside (KI): operates in men's and women's prisons around Australia   is a 40 hour program over 3-5 days inside prisons presents the possibility of a more functional life through supportive, compassionate and non- judgmental interactions and role modeling is followed up by weekly, fortnightly or monthly meetings Kairos Inside (KI) operates in men's and women's correctional centres around Australia  After a ‘Short Course’ there is an ongoing ‘Journey’ program where a rotation of team members continue to return every week or fortnight until the next Short Course is run in 6 or 12 months’ time.

6 Kairos Outside for Women or Men: (KOW/KOM)
is a weekend retreat hosted by volunteers for female or male (separate programs) family members and supporters of people in prison or who have been in prison is open to family members 18 years and over guests are encouraged to attend by the inmate who has undertaken the short course inside provides a supportive community of other women or men who understand their situation is followed up with regular reunions Often the families, especially the women, are the forgotten victims of someone else’s crime. This is why Kairos Outside for Women reaches out to the family and friends of inmates, saying “You are not alone.” KOW is open to any female relative or supporter (18 years +) of a current or former prison inmate. KOM is open to any male relative or supporter (18 years +) of a current or former prison inmate. The goal of the weekend is to give friends and family members a supportive community of other men who understand the challenges associated with supporting someone in prison or someone who has been in prison Guests attending either a men’s of women’s weekend are often encouraged to do so by the inmate who has undertaken the Short Course on the inside, and this can bring healing to families upon their release. We follow the weekend with Reunion days and coffee groups in order to support their ongoing journey.

7 Kairos Torch is a program that:
reaches out to juvenile offenders, offering unconditional acceptance encourages young offenders to realise their potential helps them to learn what life can be like in a loving, caring and trusting community promotes participation in the long-term mentoring process The goals of Kairos Torch are: to provide a safe place for exploration (emotionally and spiritually); to offer unconditional acceptance; to encourage the sharing of life journeys and help troubled youth realise there is a potential to stop the cycle before they get in too deeply; to foster personal growth in all its forms; and to promote participation in the long-term mentoring process that is a core part of the Kairos Torch program. Kairos Torch takes place over several days and includes a series of talks by highly trained and experienced team leaders

8 Kairos Volunteers: undertake intensive training before they are selected to be on a team provide a safe, non-judgmental environment where guests can interact with others without shame allow guests to experience unconditional love and support as they meet others who understand their situation include Chaplains who are available to support both team members and guests Teams undertake extensive training to equip them to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment where guests have the opportunity to interact with others without shame and to experience unconditional love and support as they meet others who readily understand their situation, perhaps for the first time. These teams are supported by a number of chaplains who are available for both team members and guests throughout the weekend.

9 Kairos is not glamorous
It works in places where no-one is looking but is effective because it brings meaning and purpose, and a vision of what is possible as the foundation for a journey of a transformed life Kairos changes are sustainable Programs in Australia and overseas provide proven outcomes in stopping the cycle of repeat offending, thus positively impacting families and communities Kairos is affecting the next generation Children see adult family members modeling a new life without crime, they too are encouraged to consider their choices Kairos is helping save society money Every person not returning to prison saves the community at least $75,000 from non-custodial care

10 How can you help? Prayer – covering all Kairos activities, our volunteers and our guests Agape – is the type of love that offers unconditional, unqualified giving, such as writing letters, baking biscuits, signing up on a prayer roster, attending a closing ceremony Donations – partner with Kairos by a regular or one-off monetary gift. Donations over $2 are tax deductible so please advise if you wish to have a tax receipt issued Every time a Kairos Short Course or weekend is operating, a prayer roster is established so that people are constantly praying for the guests throughout the program…some regions added their course details to an international online register of prayer vigils, which covers a 24-hour period Kairos Prison Ministry is a self-funded ministry and we rely on fund raising activities, grants and donations to finance our various activities. For example, a Guest Weekend costs in the order of $11,000 to run and is free to all guests to attend. Kairos makes a difference – you can too

11 Kairos makes a difference
