Hi Everyone, I am happy to have a chance to brief you on the High Energy and Nuclear Physics Internet2 working group. During this session we will have an overview of our group, information about national and international networks related to HENP and talks on monitoring and performance which our HENP WG has focused on.

3 HENP WG Goals One of our first task upon forming our working group was to define a set of goals These goals needed to address the range of interests and concerns of our community We arrived at 9 goals, which are now part of our charter. These are are the best definition of what our working group is about… For each goal, there are one or two associated contacts listed. The goals are not given in any particular order… October 27, 2002

4 HENP WG Goal #1 Support the development and deployment of toolkits, documentation and guidelines for best practices so that existing expert knowledge and tools for high throughput data transfers, packet loss and throughput-limit monitoring, and collaborative systems are widely known. Contact: Tom Hacker/Shawn McKee (U Mich) To achieve high performance, especially above the FastEthernet level, will require tools and best practices being widely distributed. This goal is focused on finding, organizing and providing this information… October 27, 2002

HENP WG Goal #2 Support the deployment of testing and monitoring tools and applications, link and site instrumentation, and a standard methodology, in association with the Internet2 End-to-End Initiative, so that all of HENP's major network paths can be adequately monitored, and used at full capability. Contact: Iosif Legrand()/Les Cottrell (SLAC)* (Status report today at WG meeting) Network users, especially those trying for the highest throughput, typically get connections which fall far short of the theoretically possible values…the first question is then WHY? Having an infrastructure in place to get the information necessary to locate the bottleneck is critical to achieving high performance… October 27, 2002

HENP WG Goal #3 Share information and provide advice on the configuration of routers, switches, PCs and network interfaces, and network testing and problem resolution, to achieve high performance over local and wide area networks in production. Contact: Sylvain Ravot(CERN)/<To be named> (Status report today at WG meeting) Network equipment can be very complicated and for most users it should be transparent. However, when setting up high performance networks, it is critical to have well tested, practical information about how to configure all the equipment to achieve optimal performance. October 27, 2002

7 HENP WG Goal #4 Work with the staffs of the international (Tier0), national (Tier1), regional (Tier2) and local (Tier3) Grid facilities as needed, to verify high throughput and network responsiveness, in association with the Grid projects, and for new collaborative interactive systems. Contact: Les Cottrell* (SLAC) The tiered hierarchical grid computing model implicitly relies on a high performance network to achieve its goals. It is critical that we understand what the specific needs of a high performing grid are, as relates to the underlying network, and understand how to monitor and tune the network to meet those needs, including collaborative needs! 8 HENP WG Goal #5 Work with the sites, expert networking teams at national labs, universities, and computational science centers, to develop and expand on a knowledge base for high performance networks. Develop a support base of knowledgeable engineers, technicians and scientists to assist with the above goals. Contact: <TBN> Everyday network engineers deal with numerous problems and find working solutions. As we move into the HENP future we need to identify knowledgeable people and develop a network support base. October 27, 2002

9 HENP WG Goal #6 Work to identify and track the programmatic network needs of the current and future generation HENP program: quantitatively in terms of bandwidths, throughputs and computer system capabilities required to provide the needed overall performance; and qualitatively in terms of the features and characteristics of existing and new systems needed for efficient distributed data access, processing and analysis as well as remote collaboration. Contact: Harvey Newman(CalTech) What are the requirements for HENP, both quantitatively and qualitatively? The answer is critical for planning and implementing HENP computing models and will evolve over time. We need to be sure to monitor developments both in HENP and in network technologies to insure this information remains current. October 27, 2002

10 HENP WG Goal #7 Work with GriPhyN, PPDG, EU DataGrid, iVDGL and other Grid projects to ensure that the US and global network infrastructures are satisfying the programmatic needs of scientists using grids. Contact: Dantong Yu(BNL)/Iosif Legrand()* Many groups are working on the grid computing concept and HENP has identified “the Grid” as the primary means of meeting our computing needs for future large scale experiments. We need to make sure we maintain a robust interaction with these grid projects to insure that they stay aware of the network and the network provides the performance and services required by the grid. HENP WG Goal #8 Work with the network engineering staffs of the US and global research networks to help define the requirements and operational procedures for a Global Grid Operations Center, and mission-specific Grid Operations Centers as needed, so that the ensemble of research networks is able to work efficiently and provide the high level of capability required. Contact: Jim Williams (IndianaU) (Status report today at WG meeting) Networks have long had NOCs, network operations centers, which are responsible for maintaining the network. Their primary emphasis has been on the “dial-tone” level, that is insuring connectivity to all network clients. With the concept of grid computing we need to move beyond NOCs and into GOCs or grid operations centers. Such centers would be aware of the unique requirements grids place upon the network and would provide grid performance monitoring and tuning and well as insuring grid connectivity. October 27, 2002

12 HENP WG Goal #9 Investigate emerging new network technologies, such as optical switching and lambda-based network infrastructure, for applicability and potential use in support of the HENP program. If appropriate, develop a strategic plan for coordinated deployment of these technologies among HENP sites. Contact: Phil Demar(FNAL)/Bill St. Arnaud(CANARIE) Network technologies are ever evolving and it is critical that we look forward to see how HENP might take advantage of new developments to meet our needs.
