LIST patterns in the number of spokes on circles: The spokes represent electrons. Do the spokes represent the total number of electrons? Explain your thinking. The number of spokes increases by one across a period. The number of spokes is the same down a column Except for He and H the spokes do not represent total electrons. Lithium has 3 electrons but the picture shows one spoke.

7 Vocabulary (Unit Intro)
Valence shell: The outermost electron shell in an atom. Valence electrons: The electrons located in the outermost electron shell of an atom. Core electrons: All other electrons in an atom besides the valence electrons.

9 General Patterns of Electrons
Atomic number = number of electrons for neutral atoms Period number = the number of electron shells For main group elements, the group number = number of valence electrons

What patterns do you see in valence electrons? Valence electrons increase by one across a period Valence electrons are the same down a group for the main group elements.

What patterns do you see in core electrons across the second row? Core electrons remain at 2 across the second row. They are 10 across the third row.

Why is there a change in the number of core electrons across the fourth row? There are ten transition elements between Calcium and Gallium and those ten electrons fill the third shell
