1 Mythology Fall Semester, 2008 Mrs. O’Brien
Myths are humanity’s earliest attempts to explain the universe, its creation, and its workings. The study of the mythology of a particular culture reveals the way of life and thought of that culture. Since our civilization traces its roots back to Greek culture, it would seem that a knowledge of classical mythology is important. Literature is filled with allusions of gods and goddesses—we also see mythological references in our television shows and our movies. This class is designed to: make students aware of classical mythology make students aware of what mythology says about the culture that created it make students aware of how myths compare and contrast to other cultures and times make students aware of how mythology has influenced succeeding generations even up to today. Students will be have the following types of assignments: Class participation In-class readings Reading homework In-class writing assignments Homework writing assignments Solo/group projects and presentations Announced/Pop quizzes Exams Students will need the following materials every day: Student Planners (required for restroom, etc.) Ink pens Folder for handouts—there will be MANY handouts because we do not have a traditional textbook Paper Mythology book (paperback) A positive attitude and an open mind
