CPR for Adults [Adults are considered high school and above for CPR.]

2 6 steps to CPR… 1. check responsiveness 2. call 911 3. check vitals
4. 30 chest compressions 5. 2 breaths 6. 5 cycles then recheck vitals

3 Checking Responsiveness:
Shake and shout “Are you OK?”

4 Checking Vitals: Look- Listen- Feel- At chest rise
For breathing by putting ear next to mouth Feel- For a pulse at the carotid artery

5 Avenues 1. No pulse and no breathing
Cardiac arrest! We will perform full CPR 2. They have a pulse and are breathing, just unresponsive Call 911, stay with victim and monitor 3. They have a pulse but No breathing Rescue breathing 1 breath every 5 seconds

6 Chest Compressions Purpose of compressions-
Compressions circulate oxygenated blood throughout the body. Victim should be flat on their back on a hard, flat surface. Victim’s head should be on the same level as the heart or lower.

7 Correct Hand Position Draw 2 lines
1. down the center of the body 2. across the nipples Place palm of hand where 2 lines intersect Place other hand on top of first and interlock fingers Keep fingers up and off victim

8 Body Position of Rescuer
Should be kneeled down on the side of the victim with proper hand placement. Straighten your arms and lock your elbows Your shoulders should be directly over your hands. Push with the weight of your upper body, not with the muscles of your arms.

9 Compression Technique
Push the sternum down 2 inches in depth. Compressions should be smooth. Recoil- let victims chest come all the way up before next compression is performed. Do not pause between compressions. Give compressions at the rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute Count aloud, “One and two and three and… up to 30.

10 Breaths: Once you have completed 30 chest compressions…
Transition yourself to the victim’s head Perform a head tilt/chin lift Pinch victim’s nose Tilt head back Lift chin anteriorly Put your mouth over victims creating a seal Perform 2 breaths

11 Breaths Continued: 2 breaths- Each breath should last about 1 second
1 second pause in between each breath As you are giving breaths… Watch for a chest rise Once chest starts to rise you may cut off that breath

12 Compression/Breathing Cycles
For 1 person CPR do 30 compressions and 2 breaths. Position yourself between the chest and head. For each cycle, give 30 chest compressions, open the airway with the head-tilt/chin-lift and give 2 slow breaths. This cycle should take about seconds.

13 When to Stop If another trained person takes over CPR. EMS arrives.
Scene becomes suddenly unsafe. If an AED becomes available If you are exhausted and can’t continue.
