The Wrath of God “If God loves all that is right and good, and all that conforms to his moral character, then it should not be surprising that he would hate everything that is opposed to his moral character. God’s wrath directed against sin is therefore closely related to God’s holiness and justice. God’s wrath may be defined as follows: God’s wrath means that he intensely hates all sin.” – Wayne Grudem from Systematic Theology

The Wrath of God NOT limited to the Old Testament: Romans 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness. John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

The Wrath of God NOT limited to the Old Testament: Colossians 3: Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.

The Wrath of God NOT limited to the Old Testament: Romans 2:5,8 5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. … 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

The Wrath of God Picture of this: Genesis 15:16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.

Revelation 16

They refused to repent…
Ultimately, the wrath of God is when He removes His Presence Control Drawing & convicting agent— the Holy Spirit

The Gospel! Viewed alone, God’s wrath would cause only fear and dread He pursued and rescued us (God’s love) He placed His stored-up wrath on Jesus (God’s justice)

The Gospel! Romans 5:9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 1 Thessalonians 5: For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.

The Gospel! 2 Peter 3: Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.

The Gospel! 2 Peter 3: By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

The Gospel! 2 Peter 3: The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

The Gospel! 2 Peter 3: Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming…
